Amazon's Alexa is Creepily Laughing at People

Amazon Alexa now supports music streaming from Deezer

Amazon is "aware" Alexa is laughing at you and is "working to fix it", the Verge reports. Last year, a viral video showed a woman asking Alexa whether she was "connected to the Central Intelligence Agency", but the Amazon Echo device stayed silent and then went to sleep without a word.

It's one thing to believe that Amazon's Alexa is constantly listening to us, but quite another to worry that she's laughing at what she hears.

But so far, it's unclear why Alexa is laughing even when users don't ask her to.

NBC News reports the laughter, sometimes heard as a childlike cackle, is happening at inappropriate times. Amazon's smart speakers can be programmed to respond to a few words: "Alexa" is the most common, but other options like "Echo" and "Amazon" are available as well.

But reported situations of unprompted laughter in silent homes are obviously quite creepy.

The amusing commercial at the time featured celebs: Cardi B., Anthony Hopkins, Rebel Wilson and Gordon Ramsay taking over Alexa's commands while giving their own personal opinions on what users requested the assistant to do. If this had happened to me when I was home alone, I would have pissed my trousers.

To set up voice control for Deezer, set it as your default music streaming service within the Amazon Alexa app and you're away. Amazon sold about 11 million Echo devices containing Alexa by the end of 2016.

Amazon had no comment on what, exactly, the problem is, or when it might be fixed.
