Microsoft Previews New Privacy Screen For Windows Insiders

Microsoft has confirmed today that it's going to discontinue Windows 10 S as a separate iteration of its platform and instead offer it as a new "S Mode" in existing Windows 10 versions starting next year.

As is often the case, Microsoft Head of Hair, Joe Belfiore made the confirmation on Twitter. Whereas Windows 10 S is a standalone operating system, S Mode will be an optional feature for regular Windows 10 editions. While Microsoft already uses AI in a number of smaller ways across Windows, the company says its AI platform will give developers the tools to easily take advantage of AI and machine learning with their apps. Nevertheless, those who possess Windows 10 Pro in S Mode would have to pay 49 dollars in order to unlock the full version. Companies like Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Samsung, and Toshiba all offered their own version of laptops that would run Windows 10 S mode, with numerous computers starting at just $189.

It is a spiritual successor to Windows RT, which was locked down in a similar way as a UWP (the called Windows Metro) interface for the original Surface devices, which allowed it to run on an ARM chip. Windows 10 S users may also switch to Windows 10 Pro via an upgrade found within the Microsoft Store.

Introduced as a Chrome OS competitor, Windows 10 S was offered on low-cost machines by Microsoft and its OEM partners for as little as $189.

Belfiore, a corporate vice president in the Operating System Group within Windows, tweeted his statement in response to a PCWorld reporter's own comment that Microsoft had neglected to mention Windows 10 S in a recent blog post touting the success of Windows devices in schools. This is exactly how the lightweight Chrome OS works, which also limits users to installing apps from Google's Chrome Web Store and Play Store only.

The restriction on apps is meant to make devices more secure and stable, especially when they are loaned out to students. Vendors can choose to ship with 10S mode enabled by default and save some money on Microsoft license fees.
