Winter Paralympics: All you need to know

Canada will be sending 55 skilled athletes to compete against the world once again in the six thrilling sports and 80 medal events of alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, ice sledge hockey, snowboarding, and wheelchair curling.

Players have also abused the system - 10 members of a Spanish basketball team were stripped of gold medals they won at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics in the intellectual disability category after it was revealed they had no mental handicap.

North and South Korea will not march together under the unification flag at the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics, the International Paralympic Committee said Thursday.

In January, the IPC reiterated that the ban would be maintained throughout the PyeongChang Games, despite the International Olympic Committee's announcement last week that Russia's Olympic membership has been reinstated.

However, despite a day of amicable and positive discussions between the two NPCs in the Paralympic Village, the two parties have decided not to march under the same conditions as the Olympic Opening Ceremony. The 38-year-old, who will be skiing with guides Graham Nishikawa (Whitehorse, Yukon) and Russell Kennedy (Canmore) in PyeongChang, is making his fifth Paralympic Games appearance.

The KPC said its President Lee Myung-ho later had another meeting North Korea's Paralympic delegation chief Kim Mun-chol, also the head of the Korean Federation for the Protection of the Disabled (KFPD), but the two sides failed to narrow their differences. North Korea's participation in the Winter Olympics triggered a series of conciliatory moves, including an offer from Pyongyang to consider abandoning its nuclear weapons programme. It is the first time for North Korean athletes to compete in the Winter Paralympics.

"The fact that (the North) will make its Winter Games debut here in South Korea I also believe is hugely significant".

The rapprochement between the two countries took place after Kim Jong Un announced, at the beginning of the year, his willingness to send a delegation to the Olympic Winter Games in South Korea.

The KPC said the two Koreas had made a decision to respect each other's stance and march separately.

A lifelong lover of action sports, Schultz suffered a severe compound fracture of his left leg after crashing his snowmobile in 2008.

"I will be happy to see them, but I don't think they will be happy to see me", he confessed. The news should come as no surprise whatsoever as McKeever, who is legally blind, is one of the best Paralympians Canada has ever produced.

"In 2006... I can honestly say it's a moment I will never forget", Nicholson said.

Just like the Winter Olympics 2018, the 2018 Paralympics opening ceremony will be held at the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium.
