Spanish women give up work for a day in first 'feminist strike'

Women all over the Balkans are protesting and attending rallies that focus on "re-traditionalisation, fascism, nationalism and patriarchy" according to BalkanInsight.

Women around the world took to the streets on International Women's Day on Thursday, demanding equal rights. Activists marched to call for an end to gender disparities in salaries, gender violence and the nation's "macho" culture. In Barcelona, protesters disrupting traffic into the city center were pushed back by riot police. A protest leader said: "We have seen his direct attacks on women under his iron-hand rule and it's now time to heighten our resistance" EPAMary Amer, 22, a cattle herder, with her child in a camp in Mingkaman.

Women journalists are expected to join in demonstrations across Spain as part of the International Women's Day strike.

Popular support for Spain's first women's strike was evident in mass marches held across the main cities.

For its part, French left-wing newspaper Liberation put up its price for the day by $0.50, but only for men, to make a point about the wage gap.

Forty-nine women were killed by their partners or ex-partners in the country previous year, an increase from 44 in 2016.

Hundreds of activists sang and danced in a boisterous rally in Plaza Miranda, in central Manila, while handing red and white roses to the mothers, sisters and widows of those suspected of drug offenses who have been slain under Mr. Duterte's brutal crackdown.

Mr Duterte has come under fire from rights groups for making rape jokes and he said last month that he had ordered soldiers to shoot female insurgents in the genitals.

The Philippines took top spot as the country with the highest number of women in management roles based on the latest Grant Thornton International Ltd.'s Women in Business report.

In Rome, Catholic women challenged Pope Francis to give women a greater voice in church affairs. Former Irish President Mary McAleese, an outspoken advocate for women's ordination and LGBTQ rights, accused the church's all-male leadership of refusing to change their entrenched second-class status.
