Big showdown as farmer's march to gherao the Vidhan Bhavan

50000 Farmers march overnight for 5 hours to avoid hassling Mumbai Students, rally today

The farmers, who marched with blisters on their feet in the scorching sun, chose to walk the last leg of the 180-km march overnight, citing difficulties for office-goers and students appearing for board examinations today.

The similar demands of loan waiver and almost 50 percent profit over the input cost have been made by farmers across the country, putting the BJP-led central government in a delima. Sensing massive traffic chaos and harassment of the examinees, the state government came up with a last-minute plan of asking the farmers, who commenced the 180- km long march from Nashik on March 6 and entered the city yesterday, to start by 1 am and reach Azad Maidan by 6 am on Monday.

Nearly 70 percent of the 300 million Indians are directly or undirectly dependened of agriculture. Team of State Reserve Police Force and Riot Control Force also deployed. Leaders of the Shiv Sena, part of the state's ruling coalition, arrived in Thane to meet the farmers and farm activists, in a sea of red flags.

Joint Commissioner (Law and Order) Deven Bharti said, "We have one day to talk to the protesters and we will not let this protest hamper the everyday life of Mumbaikars".

Patidar leader from Gujarat Nikhil Sawani, who joined the march, said his community supported the protesters.

If loan waiver is provided to all the farmers without any guidelines then the burden on the State exchequer will increase to ₹35,000 crore.

"Farmers in the state are reeling under the ripples of agrarian distress and they are under huge financial burden". But the bank says it doesn't know anything about it, and I should go ask the person who sent me the message. Opposition slams government for the delay in responding to the protesting farmers.

They are planning to camp in the grounds until the government agrees to meet their demands. However, the Mumbai Police has announced that there will be no road closure or diversion on account of the Long Morcha.

"The government should give us ownership of land because it's our right as tribal people", he said.

Meanwhile, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by veteran Maratha leader Sharad Pawar is organising a protest rally in support of the farmers today in Nashik.

"I have injured my feet due to excessive walking, but I will continue to protest until our demands are met", she said.
