Austin bombing that killed teenager may be linked to previous attack

Police: Deadly package bombs that killed 2 in Austin are linked, possibly hate crimes

After an investigation by the bomb squad, police said they determined later that the second package was unrelated to the device that killed the teen. Police are telling people not to open packages they aren't expecting and to instead call 911. "It make take a little while to get there because we are getting several calls".

A 17-year-old boy was killed and a woman was injured Monday morning when a package in their home exploded. The package was brought inside and as it was opened, it exploded in the kitchen resulting in the injuries. Authorities haven't said whether that explosion was also caused by a bomb.

And bomb disposal experts were called off the scene of Monday's murder after a third explosion in downtown Austin left a woman in her 70s with life-threatening injuries.

The first explosion took place on March 2, killing 39-year-old Anthony Stephan House, who was found on his porch.

House was transported to Round Rock Hospital, where he later died.

"I was sleeping and then I heard pow", added neighbor Diem Delahou. "Especially while we don't know very much".

Earlier in the month, another attack killed a 39-year-old black man, which prompted the police to inform residents to immediately contact the station if they received any unexpected packages.

"We can not rule out that hate crime is at the core of this", Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said Monday.

Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said Monday all three explosions seemed to be "related" but they were not ruling anything out in the investigation. Manley declined to discuss in detail what those similarities were. The victims in all three cases were African-American or Hispanic, and police said they were examining the attacks as possible hate crimes.

"We cannot rule [out] that hate crime is at the core of this, but we're not saying that's the cause as well", Chief Brian said. "With your help, we can continue to support a better informed local community and a healthier democracy for another 30 years". Just before noon, a 75-year-old Latina woman who was left badly injured just as police chief Brian Manley was holding a news conference about the earlier bombing incident.

The U.S. Postal Service said Monday's package did not go through any of its facilities. The FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are jointly investigating the incidents with APD.

Speaking again on Monday afternoon after the third blast, Manley said: "Similar to the other two incidents, the victim in this incident came outside of her residence and found a package out front and she picked up that package and at that point the explosion, the bomb, detonated".

"So, we are still working to identify whether or not that may play a role, but we are not going to rule that out".
