House intelligence Republicans shut down Russian Federation probe

At one point, Republicans considered erecting a wall in the committee's office to separate GOP and Democratic aides. "That's what this next phase is about and we hope Democrats will join us in seeing this through".

RYAN LUCAS, BYLINE: Hi there. So it seems he is backing up the conclusion the House Intel Committee intends to reach. That leaves the Senate Intelligence Committee to sort this out (and it seems Burr is on board with the House).

"The fundamental problem from the beginning was that my colleagues viewed their job as protecting their client, the president, rather than getting to the truth, and I think that's a grave disservice to the country", he said. But this is an investigation that has become very partisan.

Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee disagree with the position of every USA intelligence agency that Russian Federation wanted Donald Trump to be elected president. "We found perhaps some bad judgment, inappropriate meetings", Michael Conaway, a Texas Republican, who led the investigation, told reporters in a Monday briefing, reported by USA media.

Democrats on the panel are expected to release their own report. Now, Special Counsel Mueller is continuing his investigation. The Senate panel is expected to issue findings on the more controversial issue of coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation at a later date. It's a criminal investigation.

Nunes, a close supporter of the president, sought with some success to turn it into an investigation of the previous administration of Barack Obama, whom he and Trump accused of illegally spying on the Republican's campaign.

But House Republicans saw things differently as they pushed for an end to the investigation. "That wasn't an investigation", a social media user went on to add.

SHAPIRO: OK, so those are two investigations - the House Intelligence Committee and Robert Mueller's.

The decision leaves just a single committee on Capitol Hill that is investigating attack on American democracy full time, in addition to the special counsel. They've succeeded for the most part. Yes, they had cyberattacks, active measures going on. We will show the people they were wrong on this. So that investigation does continue.

Stewart and his colleagues on the committee have wrapped up the Russian Federation probe. What role do the Democrats on that committee play now? We'll see whether they merit much of a mention in the final GOP report. In fact, one Republican on the panel, Rep. Tom Rooney (R-FL), admitted last night that the committee had "gone off the rails". He said that the committee's work ended "leaving questions unanswered, leads unexplored, countless witnesses uncalled, subpoenas unissued". But Democrats say there are thousands more pages of documents the committee never procured, and dozens more witnesses they need to call in to interview.

SHAPIRO: NPR's Ryan Lucas, thank you.
