Hundreds of passengers stranded as DGCA grounds 11 IndiGo, GoAir planes

Indigo and GoAir 11 A-320 Neos planes with faulty PW engines grounded

Of these, 8 are operated by IndiGo and 3 by GoAir. In a series of similar instances in recent months, A320neo aircraft across the world suffered identical engine failures and were forced to make emergency landings.

A successor of the A320 family, the Airbus A320 neo is passenger aircraft that comprises four narrow-bodied aircraft variants: A318neo, A319neo, A320neo and A321neo.

The DGCA says that A320neos with engine serial numbers ESN 450 and beyond will be grounded.

The DGCA has also ordered the airlines not to refit the engines even though there are spares in their inventories.

Of the 11 grounded planes powered by a specific series of Pratt & Whitney engines, eight belong to IndiGo and three to another budget airline, GoAir.

Meanwhile, Vistara said the move by the aviation regulator has had no impact on its operations as its A320 Neos are fitted with a different engine. That's not acceptable, according to the Indian regulator, which said the manufacturer had "no concrete proposal in place at this stage".

A senior DGCA official said 8 aircraft of IndiGo would be grounded.

The European Aviation Safety Agency has ruled that operations with one defective engine should be permitted provided affected planes don't undertake extended flights over water, where they're more distant from diversionary airports in the event of an emergency.

"The corrective action has been approved and we have already begun to deliver production engines with the upgraded configuration".

It added that the "aircraft on ground situation" may take until Q2 to be resolved.

"All affected passengers have been given the option to either choose another flight at no additional cost or cancel their booking and get a full refund without any cancellation charges". The aircraft landed safely on one engine with no injuries.

Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu is wasting no time in his new ministry.
