President Trump honors Houston Astros for World Series win

President Donald Trump is reportedly in talks with a veteran lawyer who represented Bill Clinton in his impeachment proceedings

Responding directly to last month's gun massacre at a Florida high school, the administration rolled out a series of policy proposals that focus largely on mental health and school safety initiatives.

He is now striking a very different tone as he backpedals from his earlier demands for sweeping reforms. But you can buy the kind of weapon used in the school shooting at 18.

The administration laid out its goals to prevent future mass shootings during a background call with senior administration officials on Sunday, almost a month after the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 students and staff dead.

In a televised meeting with lawmakers on February 28, Trump praised members of the gun lobby as "great patriots" but declared "that doesn't mean we have to agree on everything".

"I mean, so they buy a revolver - a handgun - they buy at the age of 21".

He then turned toward Sen. Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania and Democratic Sen.

"President Donald Trump has completely caved to the gun lobby", Feinstein said in a statement Monday.

"Because you're afraid of the NRA (National Rifle Association)".

The president's plan to combat school shootings is putting the pressure on states to pass measures to help stop would-be school shooters, as well as Congress, to slow the growing trend of mass shootings across the United States.

"The president, as you know, doesn't have the ability to just create federal law", Sanders said.

Opting for a plan the administration officials described as "pragmatic", Trump backs legislation proposed in Congress aimed at providing more data for the background check system - a database of people who are not legally allowed to buy guns. He told The Wall Street Journal that the bank "actually makes money" and endorsed the idea it helps USA companies that have to compete with foreign rivals that receive subsidies from their governments - arguments that supporters of the Export-Import Bank of the United States have made for years. "Things are moving rapidly on this, but not much political support (to put it mildly)".

Visits to the White House by champion sports teams once were highly anticipated, but they have become politically fraught in the age of Trump.

"We can't just write things down and make them law". "Sometimes we don't like the things he does or like the things he does". Both are broadly popular on Capitol Hill, although a handful of Republican senators are objecting to speedy passage of the background check bill. It should not escape anyone's notice that President Trump seems to have received a permission slip from the NRA to express support for these bills, but no others.

Students from the school have taken the lead in a national campaign to advance gun control, meeting Trump and other leading politicians, and helping force through a new law on age limits for purchasers in Florida.

State Department of Education Commissioner Dianna Wentzell said "As education leaders it is our responsibility to foster a school climate that supports student achievement and well-being in which children feel welcome, accepted, valued and - above all - safe and secure".

Still, Trump argued that this was progress.

Monday afternoon's White House press briefing had Sarah Huckabee Sanders painting the picture of Trump up against a lot of roadblocks when it came to upping the age for purchasing a gun fro 18 to 21.

"Bump Stocks will soon be out". On Monday, he tweeted what amounts to support for an end to schools being gun-free zones, writing, "If schools are mandated to be gun free zones, violence and danger are given an open invitation to enter". Debunking the claims was Fox News host Shepard Smith who did so during a March 12 broadcast. There's overwhelming public support for the issue, plus Democrats in Congress have been calling for common-sense gun control measures for years. Trump released the plan on Sunday night.

No deadline was set for the commission's recommendations, but officials expected them within a year.

The lawyer is Emmet Flood, a partner at Williams & Connolly, the New York Times reports in a story based on four anonymous sources.
