Raiders cut Sean Smith; CB to be sentenced to prison for assault

Sean Smith will be released by Oakland Raiders

Entering Monday, Oakland had more than $16.5 million in salary-cap space, per ESPN Stats & Information.

In two seasons with Oakland, Smith had 4 total interceptions and 15 passes defended, but the boxscore doesn't tell the full, largely disappointing story.

Following a domestic violence incident in Nob Hill last week, Oakland Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith pled not guilty in court on Monday.

Turning 31 in July, Smith never lived up to the massive four-year, $40 million pact he signed two offseasons ago, a deal that included $20 million guaranteed.

The window for teams to sign free agents opens Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT, when the new league year begins. As part of Smith's plea agreement, he will be sentenced to one year in prison and three years of probation. He will plead guilty Tuesday to a felony count of assault with great bodily injury in connection with an altercation in Pasadena previous year, according to the attorney for the alleged victim.

Smith's release underscores the Raiders' needs at cornerback this offseason.

The Raiders' move to release Smith saves the team $8.5 million on their salary cap.

Carrie is believed a higher priority to re-sign, although there is some question as to whether the Raiders' interest will match that from other teams on the open market.
