Dem senator: I hope DeVos 'gets a handle' on school safety commission

Betsy DeVos can't answer basic questions on sexual assault, school choice in rough 60 Minutes interview

"I have not intentionally visited schools that are underperforming". Most of her career entailed fighting for the federal government to loosen its grip on public education in MI.

The interview came as the White House announced that DeVos would lead a commission to examine ways of protecting schools and students from gun violence in the wake of the February 14 shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla.

DeVos' "60 Minutes" appearance was widely panned, with CNN contributor Ana Navarro saying she "had not seen a TV interview so cringe-inducing, since Sarah Palin saw Russian Federation from her back yard" and U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., saying that if President Donald Trump wants to "meet someone who has an actual IQ problem", he should look to DeVos.

In the same way, when Devos was asked about arming teachers, she responded with it "should be an option" for the states and communities.

Nina Rees, CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, declared a year ago that the debate over charter schools was "over" and that charter schools were unequivocally better than their traditional counterparts.

"I'm fighting every day for every student, in every school - public and private - to have a world-class education".

To understand how, we need to start with a letter that Sen.

Last week, DeVos attracted widespread condemnation during her visit to Parkland, Florida, where she failed to meet or engage with students affected by a recent mass shooting.

DEVOS: Well, one sexual assault is one too many, and one falsely accused individual is one too many. Between suggesting teachers in Wyoming should be armed with guns because of bears and struggling to answer basic questions at her confirmation hearing, it's been a rough start for DeVos.

When DeVos tried to argue that America's public schools haven't benefited from an infusion of money, Stahl pushed back, saying test scores have actually increased.

Stahl challenged her argument there were "lots of pockets" where students were doing well, telling DeVos: "Your argument that if you take funds away that the schools will get better is not working in MI, where you had a huge impact and influence over the direction of the school system here".

To that, Devos offered up this inspiring answer, "I hesitate to talk about all schools in general because schools are made up of individual students attending them".

This is the case in DeVos' home state of MI, where the public school system has been ravaged by school choice.

"You're not going to solve the problem if you don't acknowledge the problem", says Pratt Dawsey. Black public school students are suspended at 3.8 times the rate of white students. I don't know. But I'm committed to a process that's fair for everyone involved.

After her morning television interviews, DeVos repaired to Twitter to take issue with one part of the CBS interview. Did she never think before this interview that visiting poor performing schools might be a good idea? Stahl asked DeVos on Sunday. CNN reported that White House officials watched DeVos's 60 Minutes appearance and follow-up Monday interview "with dismay".

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos struggled to describe her and the administration's stance on a number of education issues on CBS's "60 Minutes" Sunday, in an interview with host Lesley Stahl. She will be leading a new Federal Commission on School Safety.

With DeVos struggling to offer sound evidence for how her decisions have improved student performance, critics deemed the interview yet more evidence the MI native is unqualified for her job.
