Rabada ban: ICC sweating silly stuff

South Africa's AB de Villers right bats against Australia during the second day of the second test at St. George's Park in Port Elizabeth South Africa Saturday March 10

"You could say that the contact (between Rabada and Smith) was very, very minimal".

After match-winning 11 wkts to level series, Rabada handed MoM, 2-game suspension In what might well be his last act of the tour, Kagiso Rabada set up South Africa's series-leveling sixwicket win over Australia in the second test with another spell of furious fast bowling on Monday.

Both players were docked 50 per cent of their match fees along with three ICC demerit points for their conduct.

"The match referee said there are bigger things to play for here, that's why he didn't want to ban Davey Warner", he said.

A series win for England could see them overtake New Zealand to take the fourth position in the Test Team Rankings as the latter is just one point ahead at 100 points.

"I found that there was contact between Rabada and Smith, and in my judgement, the contact by Rabada was inappropriate and deliberate", he said.

In the press conference after the second Test against Australia at Port Elizabeth, South African captain Faf du Plessis questioned why Rabada and Warner were booked by the ICC under the same level of offence when (according to the South African captain), Warner's move appeared to be more aggressive.

Nathan Lyon got off lightly, by contrast, for his contemptuous "ball drop" incident on (OK, Australians, next to!) a sprawled AB de Villiers, as did Mitch Marsh for his again fairly novel expletives to Rabada as a departing batsman in the second innings of the Port Elizabeth Test.

Rabada, who claimed a 10-wicket match haul for the fourth time in his career, soared past James Anderson to the top position and is now 15 points ahead of the English swing bowler at 902 points.

It meant the pacer had accumulated nine demerit points within a two-year period, which automatically triggers a two-match ban.

"I won't change the way I express myself but I just will get far away from the batter", Rabada told the International Cricket Council's official website.

"If I knew that I did it deliberately then I wouldn't have gone in to contest", he said. "KG will probably have to be smart when he celebrates a wicket, but I don't see what KG has done is wrong, I just see it as passion".

Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was fined 20% of his match fee and given one demerit point after accepting a charge of using offensive language. "It doesn't stop", he said.

South Africa are now sweating on the return from a heel injury of Dale Steyn but he is yet to play a warm-up game and is a more realistic chance of featuring in the fourth Test in Johannesburg rather than next week in Cape Town. Anticipating the ban, he said: "I would have loved to be playing in the next game, especially coming off a performance like that". Honestly, I didn't feel contact in that moment. I'm not happy about it.
