Will Russia 'go away and shut up' as London suggests?

Soldiers wearing protective clothing prepare to lift a recovery vehicle as the investigation into the suspected nerve agent attack on Russian double agent Sergei Skripal continues

Britain's defense secretary Gavin Williamson announced plans Thursday to build a new 67 million USA dollar Chemical Weapons Defense Center.

The Defence Secretary was responding to a question over the potential for a British military response against Russian Federation should relations between the two countries deteriorate further.

The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory - its official name - employs 3,000 scientists across a sprawling rural site, and has an annual budget of £500 million.

Thousands of British troops are also to be vaccinated against anthrax.

There are already fears of an escalation in tit-for-tat expulsions now that Britain has ordered 23 Russian diplomats, believed to be undeclared agents, to leave the UK.

Following the attack on Skripal, Britain tasked the DSTL in Wiltshire with analyzing the nerve agent that was used to poison the former spy.

The UK Defence Secretary said relations between London and Moscow were "exceptionally, exceptionally chilly".

"I made the decision to offer the anthrax vaccine to our forces at the highest readiness, providing them with vital protections against a deadly danger", announced Williamson.

He said Britain had arrived at a "profound moment" in its history and said the country could not afford to "sit back and let events overtake us or step forward".

"We have got to open our eyes to the fact that people are willing to do so much more than they ever did in the past and we have got to be ready for those threats". A unit of soldiers trained in information warfare will be taken "to the next level" to counter opponents' false narratives.

Williamson was appointed defense secretary last November by Prime Minister Theresa May, replacing Sir Michael Fallon who resigned.
