U.S. retailers warn Trump over negative impact of China tariffs

Peter Navarro rose to fame by publishing anti Beijing diatribes on trade

"Yet were this investigation to result in a broadly applied tariff remedy on imports from China, it would hurt American households with higher prices and exacerbate a USA tariff system that is already stacked against working families", the petitioners, who collectively generate $1.5 trillion in annual sales, said in a letter addressed to President Donald Trump.

Expectations of the anti-China tariffs have alarmed dozens of United States business groups, who warned on Sunday they would raise prices for consumers, kill jobs and drive down financial markets. "We must do right by American families while also addressing harmful technology practices", said the letter.

"These procedures will allow the Administration to further hone these tariffs to ensure they protect our national security while also minimizing undue impact on downstream American industries", Ross said.

The Trump administration is said to be preparing tariffs against Chinese information technology, telecoms and consumer products in an attempt to force changes in Beijing's intellectual property and investment practices.

The comments, on the heels of the newly announced US steel and aluminum tariffs, came ahead of Group of 20 meetings scheduled for today and Tuesday, according to the report.

"The [Trump] administration should not respond to unfair Chinese practices and policies by imposing tariffs or other measures that will harm U.S. companies, workers, farmers, ranchers, consumers and investors", the groups said in the letter.

One person who discussed the plan with the Trump administration told Reuters the tariffs might be subject to a public comment period.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who will attend a two-day meeting of the Group of 20 finance ministers, is expected to defend Trump's trade plans against widespread global criticism.

Entities looking to obtain exclusions from the newly passed steel and aluminum tariffs received some clarity on how to do so recently when the Department of Commerce posted the procedures for tariff exclusion.

Kohl's is the latest Wisconsin-based company to publicly denounce Trump's proposed tariffs. The president has pointed to America's $375 billion trade deficit with China and accused the country of stealing intellectual property from American companies doing business there.

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) will run a 30-second ad for the next several weeks featuring manufacturing employees directly warning Trump and other top administration officials that the tariffs will hurt their industries and make it harder to compete with foreign companies.

Several G20 officials, including the finance ministers from host country Argentina and Germany, said they will insist on maintaining G20 communique language emphasizing "the crucial role of the rules-based worldwide trading system".
