New documentary looks back on classic children's show 'Mister Rogers' Neighborhood'

Watch the emotional trailer for the Mister Rogers documentary

Focus Features has released an emotional clip of the upcoming Fred Rogers documentary "Won't You Be My Neighbor", which offers an intimate look at the iconic children's show host and his improbable role in affecting the lives of millions of children with his simple message of love.

This trailer is well timed, as today, March 20, would have been Rogers' 90th birthday.

In Won't You Be My Neighbor?

"Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" distinguished itself from other children's programming by addressing subjects that were previously considered off-limits for the genre, including divorce, race relations, and death.

It's a attractive day in Mr. Rogers' neighborhood.

"My being on the program was a statement for Fred, " said actor Francois Clemmons, an African-American who played the character Officer Clemmons on the show. "I know everyone says this, but he was radical".

Mister Rogers is back in the neighborhood and already has us reaching for the tissues. No one is ideal, not even Mister Rogers, but the trailer illustrates just how important it was to Rogers to spread kindness in the world.

It certainly seems that with today's current political climate and social media obsessed world, viewers are eager for a few more lovely days in the neighborhood. Or the lack of it. "And what we see and hear on the screen is part of who we become". Not only is it the 90th anniversary of the birth of the man himself, but in February, the 50th anniversary of the nationwide debut of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood on PBS was celebrated, including with the It's You I Like special on that network.
