Saudi Arabia eyeing $400bn U.S. investments, says crown prince

President Trump To Meet With Crown Prince Of Saudi Arabia

But as the talks took place, United States senators were debating a resolution seeking an end to American support for Saudi Arabia's role in Yemen's civil war.

Washington, D.C, March 20 (BNA): Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said that the visit of HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, to the United States will focus on discussing many files, including Iran, Yemen and Syria, in addition to Iraq, Libya and the fight against terrorism.

President Donald Trump says Saudi Arabia has been a great friend to the United States and is a "great purchaser" and "investor" in its economy.

"This is not the real Saudi Arabia", Prince Mohammed said recently about the repressive version of Islam many outsiders associate with the kingdom. In November, Mohammed invited hundreds of Saudi leaders to Riyadh's Ritz Carlton Hotel where he had them arrested for stealing from the state.

The Crown Prince's schedule will continue to evolve while he is in Washington.

"The relationship is probably the strongest it's ever been".

The crown prince wants to bring his country back to the future.

But since his rise to power previous year, Mohammed bin Salman, or MBS, has been a controversial figure.

"The concerns expressed there are reflective of deep concerns by the American public at large", said Lori Plotkin Boghardt, a Gulf scholar at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

"I miss your father, special man and I know he's coming over soon", Mr Trump told Prince Mohammed.

The visit to the White House comes at the outset of the Saudi leader's trip across the United States as the budding prince looks to sell his more modern image of the Muslim nation.

The crown prince, in a rare foray into speaking English, said on Tuesday the Saudi pledge for $200 billion in investments would end up at $400 billion when fully implemented.

As Prince Mohammed arrived in Washington, word trickled out that Saudi Aramco - the kingdom's energy behemoth - was cooling on the idea of a stock listing in NY, something Trump has publicly lobbied for.

The news was accompanied by expressions of concern about a U.S. law that exposes Saudi Arabia to legal action over the 9/11 attacks, which Riyadh would dearly like to see removed.

Trump and MBS - as he is known in Washington's corridors of power - have seen eye-to-eye on concerns about Iran's military activism, Middle East peace, relaxing Saudi Arabia's deeply conservative laws and over their love for big ticket mega-investments. The editorial notes that as part of that escalation, Salman has "brazenly announced his ambition to acquire nuclear weapons if Iran acquired them", but if this has any impact on the Trump White House it will likely be the further entrenchment of its commitment to tightening restrictions on Iran at the expense of the JCPOA.

He gave CBS's 60 Minutes an interview, which aired on Sunday, doing his best to come off as a progressive leader, and Saudi officials have been doing the rounds with USA media to emphasize Saudi Arabia's disdain for Iran, its chief rival in the region.

Consequently, the focus of escalating tensions and of the Saudi crown prince's visit to Washington appears to be on assigning blame to the opposing side for the ongoing crises in the region.

Countries can work with the U.S. to address a common security challenges in a way that can be much more efficient but also more effective, and hopefully bringing these conflicts to a resolution, the official said.
