Lone Maryland School Resource Officer Blaine Gaskill Stops Campus Shooter in Seconds

Gunman dead, 2 students injured in Maryland school shooting

Law enforcement vehicles are seen outside the Great Mills High School following a shooting on Tuesday morning in St. Mary's County, Maryland, U.S., March 20, 2018.

A YouCaring fundraising page established for teen, which identifies him as Desmond Barnes, has generated more than $12,000 for his family as of Wednesday afternoon.

She says all three had been transported to hospitals.

"And on this day, we realize our worst nightmare: that our greatest asset - our children - were attacked in one of our places, a bastion of safety and security, one of our schools". "During that engagement, he fired a round at the shooter".

The shooting at Great Mills High School, a month after 17 people were killed at a Florida high school, intensified calls for Congress to act on gun violence at schools.

The 16-year-old female student is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, and the 14-year-old male student who was shot is in stable condition. There were no immediate official reports of casualties in the shooting at Great Mills High School, located about a 90-minute drive southeast of the United States capital Washington.

"Jaelynn is an awesome young lady, whose peaceful presence and love of her fellow students and family is known throughout her Maryland-based school", the family statement said.

Questions still remain in the incident, including the motive of the shooting. Last month, Hogan pledged emergency legislation in the form of a $125 million commitment for capital improvements to make Maryland's schools safer from violence like school shootings and added another $50 million annually to pay for school resource officers, counselors and technology, but legislators have not yet taken action- something Hogan said Tuesday is "outrageous".

Great Mills High School student Isiah Tichenor told The Washington Post he saw a fellow student hold a gun to his head Tuesday and heard a police officer shout an order to put the gun down.

Other Stoneman Douglas students contrasted the Maryland school resource officer's quick response with the Stoneman Douglas officer's decision not to enter the school and engage the shooter. Students from Great Mills High School were evacuated to nearby Leonardtown High School following the shooting. The shooter, identified by the sheriff as 17-year-old Austin Wyatt Rollins, was confirmed dead after being taken to a hospital.

Deputy First Class Blaine Gaskill had no back up, but that didn't stop him from confronting a high school shooter in Maryland Tuesday and opening fire. It wasn't clear whether he shot himself or was shot by the school resource officer who responded. "This is what we prepare for and this is what we pray we never have to do", said St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron.

St. Mary's County Sheriff's spokeswoman Cpl. "Our prayers are with students, school personnel, and first responders", he said in a statement.

"They came in with guns, and they probably thought there might be another shooter, of course", she said. Agents with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined deputies at the scene. "But prayers are not enough", Hogan said. Now, I can say: 'You think it wouldn't happen?

Scott Smith, superintendent of St. Mary's public schools, noted the painful aftermath that will follow the shooting.

School officials report that there's been a shooting at a Maryland high school, that the "event is contained" and the campus is on lockdown.

#GreatMillsHighSchool most likely closed tomorrow after shooting.
