McCain says President Trump shouldn't congratulate Putin

US President Donald Trump telephoned on Tuesday Vladimir Putin to congratulate him on his re-election as Russian president for a fourth term, revealing that they may possibly hold a summit in the future.

In a telephonic conversation on Tuesday, Trump did not raise with Putin the "lopsided" nature of his victory, Russia's meddling in the United States presidential polls or Moscow's role in a nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy and his daughter in the UK, the Washington Post reported.

The call came one day after the White House said there were no plans to congratulate Mr. Putin, who easily won a presidential election Sunday in which he faced no real competition.

Trump's comments drew significant criticism among USA politicians, including by Arizona GOP Sen.

The president's tone drew a rebuke from senator John McCain, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, who wrote on Twitter: "An American president does not lead the Free World by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections".

Mueller has reportedly sent questions to the White House for a potential interview with Trump, though Mueller and investigators remain tight-lipped and there is no official date on when Trump might sit with investigators for an interview.

Trump and Putin also discussed Ukraine, Syria, North Korea and various other issues, it added. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said there are now no specific details regarding the time and location of the bilateral meeting.

In addition, the USA joined Britain, France and Germany in questioning Russia's alleged role in poisoning a former Russian spy with a military-grade nerve toxin in England.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was among the first Western leaders to "warmly congratulate" Mr Putin on Monday - a day after his re-election - stressing the need to continue dialogue "to address important bilateral and worldwide challenges and find viable solutions".

"The leaders spoke in favor of developing practical cooperation in different spheres, including on questions of how to ensure strategic stability and fight worldwide terrorism", the Kremlin said in a statement.

The British government has blamed Moscow for the attack with a military-grade nerve agent.

The flap comes as Donald Trump continues to fight off allegations that his campaign colluded with Russian Federation during the 2016 election.

"It's blatantly obvious that he has just an inexplicable level of support for President Putin", said Julie Smith, a European security expert who served as deputy national security adviser for former vice president Joe Biden.

The Kremlin spokesman says it's no big deal that U.S. President Donald Trump didn't congratulate Vladimir Putin on his re-election as president.
