Giants Trading Jason Pierre-Paul To Bucs In Draft Pick Deal

NFL News: Jason Pierre-Paul Traded To The Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Per Spotrac, Pierre-Paul has three years remaining on his contract with an average annual cap hit of just over $13 million.

As Schefter indicated in his first Twitter post about the rumored trade, the Giants were trading Pierre-Paul and a fourth-round pick this NFL Draft to Tamp Bay.

That said, he'll be missed in NY, where he was a critical part of the 2011 team that went on to win Super Bowl XLVI against the New England Patriots.

A two-time Pro Bowler and first-team all-pro in 2011, Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated after a fireworks accident on July 4, 2015.

His play was uneven, but he came back in the next season to register seven sacks, although he also missed the final four games with a cryptic lower body injury.

Flowers recorded 32 tackles, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble in 16 games during his first season with the Patriots.

He arrived eight years ago as an intriguing if risky draft pick and blossomed into a vital, productive cog of the last Giants Super Bowl championship team in 2011. To get him, the Bucs gave up a third round pick and swapped fourth round picks.

As Licht noted, Pierre-Paul is an every-down player who can affect the game in multiple ways.

Moving on from Pierre-Paul at this point also makes sense from an on-field standpoint. Earlier this month he moved fourth- and sixth-round picks this year to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a 2019 seventh-round pick and inside linebacker Alec Ogletree, whose talent fills a need at a position the Giants have long lacked production.

The trade saves the Giants only $2.5 million against their 2018 salary cap, since the remaining $15 million on Pierre-Paul's original $20 million signing bonus from last offseason's extension immediately accelerates to impact this year's cap.

Pierre-Paul is the latest of several defenders added in the offseason to aid the Buccaneers' pass rush. He also won a Super Bowl with the Giants in 2012.

Playing with a bandaged club on his hand, Pierre-Paul proved he could still be an effective player on a series of one-year contracts before signing his big extension, which now becomes part of the Buccaneers' salary cap.
