Trump Issues New Memo Banning Most Transgender Troops

Trump issues a formal ban on transgender people serving in the military

The ban has since been battled over in court, with Mattis in February giving Trump a final recommendation.

In a statement from the White House, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded to the military's memo about allowing transgender service members to serve.

As a result, Mattis has established new policies which will affect transgender people who may require substantial medical treatment, including medications and surgery.

"The Trump-Pence administration's continued insistence on targeting our military families for discrimination is appalling, reckless, and unpatriotic", added American Military Partner Association president Ashley Broadway-Mack. "This unconscionable attack on our military families can not stand - we refuse to allow it".

"There is simply no way to spin it, the Trump-Pence administration is going all in on its discriminatory, unconstitutional and despicable ban on transgender troops", Chad Griffin, its president, said in a statement.

President Donald Trump's tweets banning transgender people from serving in the military have become policy. "It requires the discharge of trained, skilled troops who have served honorably for decades". No applications will be accepted from people identifying as transgender.

The news also prompted concern on Capitol Hill.

According to a report published in The Washington Post, Trump's decision will be challeged, much like his previous decision, where he banned transgender troops.

It's not known how many transgender troops are serving - estimates vary widely. Military LGBT advocacy groups put the estimate much higher, at around 15,000. In a tweet, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi called the ban "hateful" and created to "humiliate our fearless transgender members of the military who serve with honor and dignity". Overall, Mattis contends transgender troops are not conducive to an effective military.

What do we know about transgender service members?

The directive on the matter had already been blocked by federal courts in four separate cases.

In February, the Pentagon confirmed to CNN that the first transgender person had signed a contract to join the USA military following a federal judge's ruling that said the military would have to accept transgender people.

USA's ban on transgender people serving in the military was lifted by the Obama administration in 2016.

Pentagon spokesman US Army Maj.

A day later, Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford Jr., the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, released a memo effectively stopping the military from making any changes until a new policy was adopted, and Mattis backed the move.

The policy announced by the White House on Friday will be subject to and restrained by existing court orders, unless the Department of Justice has judges dissolve preliminary injunctions.

The pushback, however is now likely to just pick up even more steam.

We must honour all those who serve in our military and sacrifice their lives to fight for the safety of our nation, he said. "And in the end people have been able to serve their country and that is what counts".

The new policy was promptly assailed by congressional Democrats and civil rights groups.
