A Future Software Update Will Fix Siri Privacy Bug

Siri privacy bug lets it read out most hidden message content on a locked iPhone

The operation was possible even though you have set your notifications hidden on the lock screen.

Fortunately, any messages or notifications sent to Apple's own Messages app, iMessage, are still protected.

The bug was discovered this week, with the command "read my notifications" yielding some surprising results for owners of Apple's flagship devices. Now, Apple has acknowledged the existing and persisting privacy-related issue on iPhone and iPad and is working on a fix which will be released soon.

We've reached out to Apple and will update this story if we receive a response.

In fact, with Apple's latest mobile operating system, iOS 11, this is a default feature. The primary device user unlocks the phone and notifications with Face ID facial recognition software, which is an excellent feature for security and privacy purposes. But if you use an alternative email app like Gmail, Siri will include those in the notifications it's willing to read.

As pointed out by MacRumors, Apple iPhone X users have a reason to be anxious by this bug. And keeping aside those battery draining issues and applications being unresponsive, iOS 11 bugs didn't even spare the $1,000 iPhone X.

We accept that there are regulatory reasons why a lockscreen isn't allowed to lock out absolutely everything: in an crisis, you want to be able to dial 112, 911, 999, 000 or whatever the relevant emergency number is without fumbling your way through an unlock code first.

Thankfully there are some basic settings that can prevent Siri from reading out your personal messages without authentication, but it takes a toll at some of your convenience. Choose the app that you don't want to show notifications and swipe its "Show on Lock Screen" toggle.

Test the bug for yourself: Go to Settings Notifications Select an app (say WhatsApp) Show Previews Select "When Unlocked". Interestingly, Siri does ask you to unlock the iPhone X if you ask it to read the last email or last note.
