Eight months for Tamimi

HR Prompts Media to Add Missing Ahed Tamimi Info

In addition, the teen also received a fine of 5,000 shekels. She pleaded guilty to four charges, including assault of a soldier, reduced from an earlier charge of aggravated assault.

Israeli lawyer Gaby Lasky (L) speaks with her client, sixteen-years-old Ahed Tamimi (R), before she stands for a hearing at the military court in Ofer military prison, near the West Bank city of Ramallah, January 15, 2018. Nariman had begun filming the soldier and a colleague standing in her family's backyard several minutes before her daughter and a cousin approached them and tried to shove the Israelis off the property.

The Israeli army said in a statement after the sentence that it "will continue operating in order to preserve the security and public order in (the West Bank) and enforce the law as it pertains to anyone who harms (Israeli) soldiers and incites violence".

Since Israel's military appeals court rejected the request to hold Tamimi's legal proceedings in an open court, Lasky said they thought a "plea bargain is the best option that Palestinians can get in the military courts" because "we understood that Ahed was not going to receive a fair trial". "There is no justice under the occupation", she said, according to a news release from the campaign organized to free her.

The arrest and confinement of minor Ahed awaiting trial in a military court blew up a intifada on social networks that were filled with petitions for release of minor under hashtag FreeAhed.

Tamimi's village of Nabi Saleh has always been a hotbed of anti-Israel protests, with many of her family members involved in clashes with Israeli forces.

The court ordered the trial closed because Ahed was being tried as a minor, as is usual in such cases.

"When they chose to keep her trial behind closed doors, we knew that we were not going to get a fair trial", Ms Lasky told AFP.

"So the final decision in Ahed's case is that she will have to be in detention for eight months, from the beginning of her arrest, meaning that she will be out from jail this summer", she said.

The ruling could have a chilling effect not just on journalists, but also on Palestinian activists who routinely record their encounters with Israeli troops, both to document abuses and to provide a measure of accountability.

Human rights groups accused Israeli authorities of "discriminatory policies", as the sentencing of Palestinian teenager Ahed Tamimi yesterday prompted widespread condemnation. The Tamimi family are among villagers who fight for their land rights with Israeli settlers.

Ahed Tamimi is the more aggressive of the two in the video.

Relatives say a member of the Tamimi family was wounded in the head by a rubber bullet fired during those protests. "Under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Israel is a state party, the arrest, detention or imprisonment of a child must be used only as a measure of last resort and for the shortest appropriate period of time", said Magdalena Mughrabi, Amnesty International's Deputy Director for the Middle East and Africa.
