Calls For Gun Control Extend Beyond Classrooms In Baltimore

Participants gather during the March For Our Lives Parkland event Saturday

The signs. The crowds. The march was put together in the five intervening weeks since the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that resulted in 17 students' deaths.

There were sobs as one teenage survivor, Emma Gonzalez, read the names of the 17 victims and then stood in silence.

More than 800 demonstrations were set to take place in the United States and around the world, according to coordinators, with sister events taking place as far afield as London, Mauritius and Stockholm.

The Parkland shooting was the 28th mass shooting in the US this year, according to the Everytown for Gun Safety research organization. The main stage for the event was set up near the US Capitol and lawmakers were the target audience as speakers delivered blistering warnings that the time has come for stricter gun laws.

Another survivor, David Hogg, said it was a new day. "We're going to make sure the best people get in our elections to run not as politicians, but as Americans".

Standing before vast crowds from Washington to Los Angeles to Parkland, the speakers - almost all of them students, some still in elementary school - delivered an anguished and defiant message: They are "done hiding" from gun violence, and will "stop at nothing" to get politicians to finally prevent it. And we know what is right and wrong.

Nearly everyone at Saturday's March for Our Lives in Washington, DC, had a story about gun violence.

The reference is to the Second Amendment, the constitutional guarantee of the right to bear arms.

People also gathered outside city hall in Las Vegas, where a gunman killed 58 people at a country music festival a year ago. Noel is also active in Everytown for Gun Safety.

Celebrities like Zendaya, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Ariana Grande, who sang "Be Alright", are also marching and using their significant platforms to spread the message.

Actor George Clooney and his human rights attorney wife, Amal, donated $500,000 and said they would be at the Washington rally.

It was organized by Grace Laflen, a Kickapoo High School Student and Hannah Brashers, a student at MSU and director of Team Millennial, a breakout group of the Southwest Missouri chapter of the National Organization for Women.

"My grandfather had a dream that his four little children would not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character", she said, referencing her grandfather's famous speech.

The House bill authorized $500 million over 10 years for grants to improve training and coordination between schools and local law enforcement and help identify signs of potential violence before they occur. We will take the big and we will take the small, but we will keep fighting.
