'Pacific Rim 2' dethrones 'Black Panther' at the weekend box office

Universal

It has become the highest grossing superhero movie of all-time.

Black Panther's weekly dominance at the box office was put to an end by Pacific Rim: Uprising, which opened at $28 million. Starring John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Sott Eastwood (Suicide Squad), Jing Tian and Charlie Day, the Pacific Rim sequel essentially did on the high-end of projections with an estimated $28 million for the weekend or $7,552 per theater.

In terms of demographics, Pacific Rim Uprising received a "B" CinemaScore from opening day audiences which broke down as 62% male vs. 38% female, of which 53% of the overall audience was 25 years or older. Though both were inexpensively made, neither of Soderbergh's first two films following his brief retirement from Hollywood has made much of a dent at the box office.

The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.

"Black Panther" added $16.7 million to its haul this weekend. The movie has become the highest-grossing superhero movie in the US, not adjusted for inflation.

Opening poorly in fourth place was the animated Sherlock Gnomeswhich made an estimated $10.6M from 3,662 theaters for a per screen average of only $2,895. The film was also directed by Stephen S. DeKnight. "Pacific Rim: Uprising" debuted there with $65 million for Legendary, which the Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group acquired in 2016. The Chadwick Boseman starrer has grossed $630.9 million domestically so far to become the fifth-highest grossing movie ever.

Elsewhere Sherlock Gnomes struggled with $10.6 million, Patrick Schwarzenegger's first star vehicle, Midnight Sun, bombed, Unsane did OK for a film made on an iPhone 7 and Christian flick I Can Only Imagine is making that sweet, sweet Jesus moolah.

With "Black Panther" finally loosing steam at the box-office, and "Tomb Raider" already a week-old, a flurry of new films hit movie theaters across the country this weekend.

The reboot "Tomb Raider" took fifth place with $10.1 million. It should end its domestic run at $85 million and will need more worldwide money to make back its $100 million budget.

A Wrinkle in Time is slipping away, down another 51% for $8 million in its third weekend. The R-rated ensemble comedy now stands at $60.8 million domestically and $94.8 million worldwide.

Love, Simon was down a decent 34% in its second weekend with $7.8 million. We'll have to see if business picks up for the upcoming Good Friday and Easter weekend. And finally the highly anticipated animated film from Wes Anderson, Isle of Dogs, opened to an estimated $1.57M from only 27 screens for a per screen average of an wonderful $58k.

Young adult romantic drama Midnight Sun stars Bella Thorne as a teen who has been sheltered at home since childhood due to a life-threatening sensitivity to sunlight.
