Police backtrack on Leah Sharibu's release, say IGP was misunderstood

Buhari vows more security for northern Nigerian schools as he met freed girls

Upon arrival in Dapchi, Yobse State, on Sunday afternoon, they were taken to the assembly hall of their school, Government Girls Science and Technical college, Dapchi, where officials had to profile them before they are allowed to go home with their patents.

A spokesman for the group, Larry Yammai, said at a briefing in Kaduna that while it shared joy with the parents of the other Dapchi girls over the release of their daughters last week, there was concern for the remaining Christian girl still in captivity.

IGP Idris disclosed this on yesterday during on courtesy call on the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj Gen Rogers Nicholas, at the command and control centre of the Theatre Command in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

Police Inspector General Muhammed Abubakar said Saturday that he cancelled a trip to Dapchi to avoid interfering with the release.

On Wednesday morning, 105 of the girls were brought back by the extremists, who drove freely into the town in a convoy of vehicles waving the black Boko Haram flag and met by cheering residents.

However, a video seen by THEWILL has shown that the Moshood was not being truthful when he said the IGP was "misunderstood and misquoted" because Idris actually confirmed that Sharibu was on her way back.

He added that the police mobile training school in Gwoza which was destroyed by the Boko Haram terroriststs is undergoing rehabilitation to become one of the best training schools in Africa and the world.

According to witnesses contacted by AFP, the girls were held on an island on Lake Chad, which is a known stronghold for fighters loyal to Boko Haram factional leader Abu Mus'ab al-Barnawi.

Unfortunately, five of the girls were said to have died while in captivity.

On Saturday, soldiers deployed in Dapchi disappeared from the town's checkpoints, raising hopes for Leah's imminent release.

Some of the newly-released Dapchi schoolgirls are pictured in Jumbam village, Yobe State, Nigeria March 21, 2018.

"It is a sort of understanding that we don't create much security (anxiety) there".

Mohammed also reiterated his earlier stance that no ransom was paid for the release of the girls.

"Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had directed all security agencies to do everything possible to bring the girls back unharmed".
