Britain must unite to seize opportunities of Brexit, says Theresa May

After Salisbury the lost art of diplomacy

The PM is to visit England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, appealing to those for and against Brexit.

"I am determined that as we leave the European Union and in the years ahead, we will strengthen the bonds that unite us", May said.

"Make no mistake, this government is absolutely committed to the devolution settlements as we have demonstrated beyond question with landmark pieces of legislation over the last few years".

May's United Kingdom tour marks the first anniversary of her official "Article 50" letter to the European Union to launch the two-year Brexit process, which will end one year from now, on 29 March 2019.

Since formal negotiations began between the two sides last June, an agreement has been struck on a Brexit "divorce bill" - but the crucial issue of how they will trade together has yet to be settled.

The companies surveyed - the biggest or most internationally-focused banks, insurers, asset managers, private equity firms and exchanges in Britain - were responding to questions about their plans in the event of a so-called "hard" Brexit, where the United Kingdom would leave not only the EU but also the single market and Customs Union.

She said each devolved region of Britain will see an increase in their decision-making powers.

Despite misgivings about the government's performance and doubts about the result of the negotiations with the European Union, 68 percent of the respondents say that "those who voted against Brexit should respect the will of the majority" - with only 35 percent thinking there should be a second referendum.

Mr McDonnell played down suggestions from Emily Thornberry that Labour would "probably" support the deal obtained by Mrs May in a Commons vote this autumn, saying that the shadow foreign secretary was being "sarcastic".

Addressing voters, she said the UK "will thrive as a strong and united country that works for everyone, no matter whether you voted Leave or Remain".

The PM then headed to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne to meet with a local parent and toddler group.

One survey this week recorded a 53%-47% lead for continued European Union membership.

Prime Minister Theresa May said, "Today, one year until the United Kingdom leaves the EU and begins to chart a new course in the world, I am visiting all four nations of the Union to hear from people across our country what Brexit means to them".

But with obstacles like an elusive agreement on managing the border with Ireland, and tough talks on trade still ahead - and Parliament's final approval another potentially unsafe hazard for the government - the route to Britain's final exit still looks, in many respects, far less predictable and well choreographed than Mrs May's rapid journey today.

She replied by saying her government was having "good discussions" with SNP ministers on the issue, adding: "We have put forward proposals as to how this issue can be resolved".
