Turnout low as Egyptians wrap up presidential vote

EGYPT-ELECTION

As Votes are being counted in Egypt following the three-day election in the country, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is slated to serve a second term as president after he had reportedly won over 90% of the vote, Egyptian state media claimed.

After the arrest of some other serious candidates, who were either arrested or intimidated, Sisi's expectations to win a second four-year term increased.

The number of eligible voters who cast their ballots stood at 95,486, with 86,112 valid votes registered, it said.

The newspaper confirmed the percentage of "about 92%" of votes for Sisi.

The election saw a moderate turnout estimated at around 40 percent, with 24 million citizens casting their ballots.

Most Egyptians who voted for Sisi expressed their belief in him as a saviour from Islamist radicalism of the now blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood group and trust in his leadership of the country for eradication of terrorism and for further security, stability and development.

The government is hoping for high turnout to lend the election legitimacy, and has staggered the voting over three days, with polls closing Wednesday at 9 p.m. (1900 GMT).

Terror activities in Egypt have killed hundreds of security men and civilians since the military toppled Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in July 2013 in response to mass protests against his one-year rule and his now outlawed Brotherhood group.

Egyptian authorities and media outlets have tried to garner as many votes as possible, telling voters it is their duty, and portraying a failure to vote as betrayal of their country.

"The voice of the Egyptian masses will undoubtedly bear witness to the fact that our nation's will imposes itself with a force that knows no weakness", he posted on Twitter.

Authorities were keen to ensure a higher turnout this time around as Sisi saw attendance at polls as a referendum on his popularity and was seeking a strong mandate to fight militants and push through tough economic reforms.

The final results are expected to be officially announced on April 2.
