Trump's Amazon Attacks Are Utterly Unnecessary

US President Donald Trump has attacked Amazon and its Chief Executive Jeff Bezos several times in the past

Do his criticisms ring true?

The online retailer has been continuously adding products which are ready to be shipped for next day or two day deliveries.

Trump also says Amazon is killing small local retailers, but De Silva says retail's woes can't be blamed on one company. Notably, packages and shipping are areas of growth for the Postal Service that have offset its general shortfalls in revenue.

An analysis by Citigroup found that USPS does in fact charge less than what it should to ship packages, which "could make Amazon susceptible to significant USPS price increases".

But Trump's claim about the Postal Service is dubious at best.

The Postal Service saw a net loss of $2.7 billion in fiscal 2017, driven by factors such as declining flat-mail volume and pension and health benefit liabilities. The FTC and other enforcement agencies guard their independence, as does the board of governors of the Postal Service.

"We're trying to pass reform legislation that will allow USPS to compete without the multi-billion dollar burden imposed on it by Congress in 2006", Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., a member of the House Oversight Committee, said in a statement to USA TODAY.

Another administration official confirmed to Reuters that Trump has been complaining about Amazon in private, believing the company has become too powerful.

President Trump responded to the article on Twitter. From left are, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Alphabet CEO Larry Page, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Vice President-elect Mike Pence, and Trump.

Attendees at Amazon.com Inc annual cloud computing conference walk past the Amazon Web Services logo in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S., November 30, 2017. Although the amount that Amazon accounted for is unknown, the Postal Regulatory Commission sees Amazon's arrangement with the service as profitable, according to a source familiar with the relationship.

A year ago in August, Trump took to Twitter to express how the e-commerce company is hurting the retail industry and is responsible for the losses of jobs in the US.

"I don't think it can be stopped but I don't think he can target one company". His latest missive comes a day after Axios reported that Trump has wondered aloud if there was a way to "go after" Amazon with antitrust or competition law.

Trump tweeted Thursday that he had voiced concerns about the company before his election. "Unlike others, they pay little or no taxes to state and local governments, use our Postal System as their Delivery Boy (causing tremendous loss to the US), and are putting many thousands of retailers out of business!", Trump said in a tweet.

Amazon did not initially collect state sales taxes when it began selling books online in 1995. Amazon does not collect state sales tax from third-party sellers in parts of the USA, in some cases those sellers are required to collect the tax.

Analysts at Stifel said the president's tweets on the topics does not seem "detrimental to Amazon".

There has been talk in Washington of taxing online commerce more.

When asked about Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin's earlier comments regarding the potential for creating an Internet sales tax, Sanders provided some additional context. The e-commerce behemoth largely doesn't collect tax on third-party sales facilitated through its marketplace platform, but has agreed to do so in Washington state and Pennsylvania.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said Thursday that some Amazon users don't pay sales taxes, such as third-party vendors who sell their goods through the site.

Here's a look back at Trump's beef with Amazon.

Indeed, local communities in Canada and the USA - including Toronto - are "falling over themselves", as De Silva put it, to woo Amazon to move its new headquarters to their city "because of the jobs and the economic impact" it would bring.

Trump's concerns have more to do with politics and The Washington Post than e-commerce, Rick Edmonds, media business analyst at Poynter, also told the E-Commerce Times.
