Zuckerberg slams Apple CEO Tim Cook's comments on Facebook as 'extremely glib'

The data-analytics firm was able to harvest the private data of over 50 million Facebook users using a fake "personality quiz". When asked what he would do if he were in Zuckerberg's shoes, Cook said he "wouldn't be in [that] situation" to begin with.

"The reality here is that if you want to build a service that helps connect everyone in the world, then there are a lot of people who can't afford to pay", he stated.

The verbal jabs revolve around Facebook's business model, which is built off your data to craft targeted ads. In 2015, Apple's CEO criticized Silicon Valley companies that offer free services, but with a hidden cost in the form of forfeiture of their personal data.

Cook told Recode's Kara Swisher last week that "privacy to us is a human right" and a "civil liberty" and that ultimately, because Facebook is a free service, the users become the products that are then sold to advertisers, something he thinks Apple is better off for not doing.

In the interview, Zuckerberg also responded to criticism from Apple Inc. "The truth is, we could make a ton of money if we monetized our customer", Cook said, "if our customer was our product". "We've elected not to do that".

Facebook is also going to prevent Custom Audience data from being shared across Business accounts, according to an anonymous email with the contacts redacted. Surprisingly, Facebook has declined to comment on that matter.

The Facebook founder said his company, like Amazon, works hard to charge you less, as opposed to Apple's approach of working hard to charge you more. "Because that sounds ridiculous to me".

Apple's Tim Cook and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg have an established history of taking shots at the other's multi-billion-dollar enterprises.

In an interview with Vox.com Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined the future of the social media platform, at one point suggesting that a "Supreme Court" model could be used when judging what counts as hate speech on the platform. But he admitted his company failed to forsee how bad actors could abuse the platform.

"That doesn't mean that we're not primarily focused on serving people. Frankly, we didn't spend enough time investing in, or thinking through, some of the downside uses of the tools", he said. Taken together, a series of steps over the past couple of weeks will make advertising on Facebook potentially more cumbersome and less efficient for marketers. Called The Ugly, the memo notes that "the ugly truth is that we believe in connecting people so deeply that anything that allows us to connect more people is *de facto* good", wrote Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, adding that these same tools have a effect, "Maybe someone dies in a terrorist attack coordinated with our tools".
