Turkey's Erdogan says Akkuyu nuclear plant investment to exceed $20 billion

Putin attends groundbreaking ceremony for Turkey's first nuclear power plant

"In this light, the nuclear power plant construction project will also make its contribution to education of Turkish citizens", he said.

On Wednesday, they will join Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to discuss Syria.

Putin and Erdogan have met several times in the past year and regularly speak on the phone.

The YPG has come to control large swaths of northern Syria, including Afrin, in the course of the Syrian war, particularly through fighting against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group in an US-backed umbrella organisation named Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Russia's power plant builder Rosatom and a number of Turkish companies are going to build a 4,800 megawatt plant in southern Turkey under a 2010 contract in a bid to reduce Turkey's dependence on energy exports.

This will be the first such object to be built in Turkey.

Earlier on Tuesday, Erdoğan and Putin participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for Turkey's first nuclear power plant in Akkuyu. "This marks a new stage in the development of Turkey's economy".

Erdogan said: 'The power plant will contribute to our energy security and also play an important role in the fight against climate change'.

Turkey's Energy Minister Berat Albayrak, Erdogan's son-in-law, praised the Akkuyu project saying: "We are standing at a crucial juncture in realising the 63-year dream".

More news: Pogba: I have no issue with Mourinho

Turkey and Russian Federation have recently put aside their traditional rivalries and differences on regional issues to forge closer ties.

Russian Federation has also ties with the group, but Turkish foreign minister Cavusoglu said "Russia understands Turkey's stance on the YPG better than the United States does, Russian Federation doesn't send any weapons to the YPG".

Their meeting comes as ties between Russia and the West are nosediving to post-Cold War lows after the March poisoning of Russian ex-double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in the UK.

While EU powers have rushed to join Britain in condemning Russian Federation and expelling diplomats over the attack on Skripal, Turkey has been much more circumspect.

Tewfik Shuman, a Lebanese political analyst, said that the new efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis will have to take into account the new realities on the field.

Russia has confirmed the decision to speed up the supplies of Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile systems to Turkey, President Vladimir Putin announced at the press conference following the Russian-Turkish talks in the Turkish capital. All three countries are heavily involved in the war-torn Arab state and now sponsoring peace efforts to bring the conflict to an end.

In the Syrian conflict, Russian Federation and Turkey have backed opposing sides but the two countries, along with Iran, have worked together to create "de-escalation zones" to reduce the fighting.

The two countries are also building the TurkStream pipeline, estimated to be worth more than $12 billion, to transport Russian gas to Turkey.
