United Nations Urges Israel To 'Reconsider' Cancelled Migrant Deal

Netanyahu had announced Monday afternoon that Israel agreed to cancel the planned expulsion of the migrants in the deal, which called for sending about half of the 35,000 African migrants to Western nations and allowing the rest to remain in Israel. By signing this agreement, we are sending a unsafe message to the whole world: Whoever succeeds in infiltrating Israel illegally will get a prize of legal residence here or a Western country.

Dozens of migrants and their Israeli supporters protested the suspension outside Netanyahu's office in Jerusalem and government offices in Tel Aviv, as he met with the neighborhood representatives.

In a joint statement, Israeli human rights groups condemned the decision to cancel the agreement, accusing Netanyahu of playing "political games".

Spindler said that Eritrean and Sudanese people in Israel should be labeled as refugees, not migrants, as they left their homes to escape persecution and war.

The UNHCR called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reconsider the cancellation of the migrants deal signed by the Israeli government and the UNHCR on Monday.

At the start of a meeting with south Tel Aviv residents, Prime Minister Netanyahu declared: "I have listened intently to the many observations about the agreement".

Labor Party leader Avi Gabbay slammed the sudden turnaround on Army Radio questioning if defense decisions are also made in the same manner.

More news: Storms for Easter Weekend?

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, on Tuesday, March 20, said that an electric fence along the Israel-Egypt border had saved the Jewish state from jihadist attacks or what he believed would be worse - a tide of African migrants.

"It is sad, troubling and even a little scary that decisions are made that way", Gabbay said. Netanyahu faced heavy criticism from nationalist allies, even within his own ruling Likud party.

Hardliners in Netanyahu's coalition criticized the deal and pressured Netanyahu to suspend it.

Rwandan officials have repeatedly denied an agreement to accept forcibly deported migrants from Israel.

The agreement was created to end the possibility of forced deportations of thousands of migrants from Israel to Rwanda. He also noted that Israel, as the receiving nation, has only in a very few cases processed and officially designated the migrants as refugees.

In February, Israeli authorities started handing out notices to male African migrants giving them two months to leave for a third country in Africa or risk being put in jail indefinitely.

The Supreme Court froze the deportations in mid-March in response to a petition.
