Google's chief of search and artificial intelligence hired by Apple

Google CEO voices support for staff after You Tube HQ shooting

Apple has long aimed to improve its algorithms without compromising its privacy policy, and the hire is one step closer to that goal.

Going forward, it remains essential for a tech giant such as Apple to be omnipresent, and negligence in one of the most advanced technologies won't end well for the world's most valuable company. Giannandrea will stay at the company, according to TechCrunch.

Google's Senior VP of Engineering John Giannandrea (L) and TechCrunch moderator Frederic Lardinois speak onstage during TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2017 at Pier 48 on September 19, 2017 in San Francisco, California. The leaders in these domains not only shape the path for technologies but refine them to an extent that it gets infused easily in an average human mind.

Giannandrea will be tasked with improving Siri, the iPhone's digital assistant that seems to have grown less popular as competitors create proprietary devices that parallel, if not more. At the time, John pointed towards Google Home as a hint of what's coming.

Google's in-house AI, machine learning, and neural networking development teams are working on some truly remarkable projects at present: From AlphaGo Zero, the AI that learned 3,000 years' worth of Go tactics in a matter of days, to AutoML, a system that makes self-correcting AI "children" that are created to perform specific tasks, their output is nothing but impressive. Facebook, Google, Amazon and Microsoft employ huge numbers of researchers working across a number of areas, who are also heavily involved in the wider global AI community. As reported by The Verge, Apple has lacked the research talent and resources in the AI department whereas its rivals have largely focused and dedicated numerous resources in the field.

Giannandrea may have a steeper curve at Apple than he had at Google due to its emphasis on user privacy. Apple didn't even let its employees publish their AI based research until 2016.

A recent Study by LoupVentures highlights the lagging intelligence of Siri when compared to her AI cousins - Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

Lately, leading Silicon Valley companies have seen major shake-ups at higher level management, in the AI space. There are surely more applications of machine learning planned in the future; Giannandrea would likely spearhead those efforts.
