Apple developing curved screens, touchless controls for future iPhones

Apple reportedly plans iPhones with curved screens and non-touch gesture controls

Unlike Samsung Galaxy S9's display, the display on iPhones will be curving inwards gradually from top to the bottom of the front of the phone. The iPhone X's OLED screen curves slightly at the bottom, but the shape is hard to detect.

MicroLED is a low-power display technology that features better color gamuts and brightness levels than LCD. What's more is that it takes into consideration the fingers proximity from the screen. However, the technology will take at least two years to get fully developed if Apple decides to take it up seriously, stated a person familiar with the company's plans.

In a world with so many smartphone manufacturers constantly competing with each other for a share of the market, innovation is a key factor and Apple is attempting to be at the forefront of innovation once again.

Now, it's important to note that Apple is position its newest iPad as being ideal for kids at school, given the new compatibility with the separately purchasable Apple Pencil, as well as the already available separate Smart Keyboard cover. Samsung has tried, but their smartphones are limited to a curve along the edges, except the curved smartphone launched in the past. The report said that the iPhone display Apple is now developing detects finger gestures even without physically touching the screen. Two years is not far off.

As stated, both features are in early stages of development and it will be a couple of years before they see the light of day. Google's ATAP research group has been working on similar technology through a program known as Project Soli.

Bloomberg reports that the initiative "is still in early developmental stages", but is meant to bring Macs into the same unified architecture that allows all of Apple's other devices to work together "seamlessly". The touchless gesture control is something that's been implemented in Samsung phones already but Apple's design seems to work on a different principle entirely. However, Bloomberg reports that the OLED display on the iPhone X will be extended to a larger 6.5-inch iPhone model, which will likely be announced this year.
