DNA test reveals fertility's doctor's dark secret, lawsuit alleges

Woman takes DNA test and discovers fertility doctor used his sperm to impregnate her mum

She is reported to have initially dismissed the Ancestry.com test that determined Mortimer was her father.

Rowlette discovered that her biological father was actually a fertility doctor who had treated her parents, who apparently used his own sperm to impregnate her mother without her consent, according to a report from NPR. - A woman who discovered that her biological father is the fertility doctor who helped her mother conceive has filed a lawsuit against him.

Consequently, the couple made a decision to be artificially inseminated using sperm from both her husband (85 percent) and a donor (15 percent), who was requested to be a university student with fairly specific physical characteristics. When Ms. Ashby investigated further and saw Dr. Mortimer's name, she was devastated. Mortimer suggested a procedure where he said 85% of Fowler's sperm would be mixed with donor sperm and inseminated to increase chances of conception.

A DNA test revealed a woman might be the biological daughter of the doctor who delivered her.

Since discovering the news, Rowlette has filed for legal action against Mortimer and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates of Idaho Falls on the grounds of medical negligence, battery, fraud, infliction of emotional distress and breach of contract.

According to court documents, Kelli Rowlette's parents, Ms. Ashby and Mr. Fowler, were a married couple struggling to conceive in 1979 in Idaho Falls, Idaho when they became patients of OGA under the care of Dr. Gerald E. Mortimer, an OB/GYN.

Last year, Rowlette had told her mother about the Ancestry.com test and believed the result was wrong. Although the family understands the public's interest in the case, it calls for respect for its privacy as it attempts to recover from this trauma. The lawsuit says that Rowlette was "horrified" and called her parents in a panic to discuss the revelation.

"Ms. Ashby contacted Mr. Fowler, now her ex-husband, and relayed the information she obtained from Ancestry.com".

Mortimer remained Ashby's doctor for several years until the she and her husband moved to Washington state.

In August, Rowlette was helping to sort through her parents' old papers when she ran across her birth certificate.

The couple maintains in the complaint that they did not know that Dr. Mortimer's genetic material was being used.

"However with this, people may learn of unexpected connections. Anyone who takes a test can change their DNA matching settings at any time, meaning that if they opt-out, their profile and relationship will not be visible to other customers", the statement said.

Over three months, Ashby underwent nine treatments. He received a one-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to two charges of obstruction of justice, the Chicago Tribune reported.
