Pakistani PM to visit Afghanistan in a bid to strengthen troubled ties

Pakistan PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to visit Afghanistan tomorrow, will discuss ways to facilitate talks with Taliban

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Friday arrived here for a day-long visit on the invitation of Afghan President Muhammad Ashraf Ghani, the media reported.

According to the statement, Ghani and Abbasi discussed a range of issues relating to Afghanistan-Pakistan relations including peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan, counter-terrorism, return of Afghan refugees, bilateral trade and regional connectivity.

Abbasi, accompanied by several other top Pakistani officials on the trip, his first to Kabul since becoming prime minister a year ago, is to hold meetings with a string of Afghan officials, according to Ghani's spokesman, Shah Hussain Murtazawi. "They agreed that there was no military solution to the ongoing Afghan conflict and that the political solution was the best way forward", read the statement.

On March 17-18th Pakistan's National Security Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Nasser Janjua in separate meetings met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Dr Abdullah Abdullah. Afghan president welcomed the prime minister and members of Pakistani delegation. In the near-term, expect both countries to tentatively boost bilateral economic cooperation, particularly in regard to small-scale investments in Afghan infrastructure; however, no major investment initiatives are expected.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed that they would not allow terrorists to use their soil for anti-state activities against each other.

They also discussed Pakistan's connection to the Central Asia, energy transition, Quetta-Kandahar-Herat and Peshawar-Jalalabad railroad projects and construction of Peshawar-Jalalabad highway.

The Afghan president and PM Abbasi further reaffirmed their resolve to build trust and confidence between the two countries by working closely for peace, prosperity and stability in both the states.

Pakistan had brokered the first round of direct talks between the fragile Afghan government and Taliban in Islamabad in July 2015.

Abbasi will be seeking to lessen mistrust with Afghanistan, whose leadership has repeatedly held Pakistan responsible for allegedly offering safe haven to leaders of the Afghan Taliban and Haqqani Network.

They have made a decision to operationalize the five working groups under "Afghanistan Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity".
