Driver of vehicle that drove into German crowd has killed himself

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas speaks to members of German armed forces during a visit to an airbase in Jordan

A van crashed into people drinking outside a popular bar Saturday in the German city of Muenster, killing two people and injuring 20 others before the driver of the vehicle shot and killed himself inside it, police said.

The van drove into people sitting at tables outside the Grosser Kiepenkerl restaurant, which is popular with tourists, the police spokeswoman was quoted as saying by news agency Reuters.

Local authorities said approximately 30 people were injured in the accident. "We wish the injured a quick recovery".

Local media reports that the large area around the scene was sealed off because of the object.

In July 2017, a 26-year-old Palestinian asylum seeker wielding a knife stormed into a supermarket in the northern port city of Hamburg, killing one person and wounding six others before being detained by passers-by.

It has been reported from various news sources that a van has collided with a group of pedestrians in Muenster, Germany, resulting in dozens of injuries and several fatalities.

Exactly how many people were injured and killed.

Andreas Boden, police spokesman for the city of Münster, says that the motive behind the attack has yet to be revealed, as does the driver's identity. Police have asked residents to avoid the area near the Kiepenkerl pub near the center of the city, where the crash took place.

Mayor Markus Lewe told reporters that "all of Muenster is mourning this terrible incident".

Images on German TV showed police and fire vehicles clustered around a street in the center of the city.

On December 19, 2016, a truck intentionally ploughed into a crowd close to a Christmas market next to the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church at Breitscheidplatz in Berlin.

Saturday's crash occurred on the one-year anniversary of a similar attack in Stockholm, Sweden, when a stolen beer truck struck pedestrians, killing five people. We will focus on reports from police officials and other authorities, credible news outlets and reporters who are at the scene.

Ulrike Demmer, the federal government's deputy spokesperson, said the government's thoughts were with the victims and their families.
