NYC police fatally shot Saheed Vassell while carrying a metal pipe

Responding to 911 calls that a black man was pointing what appeared to be a silver gun at passersby on the corner of Montgomery Street and Utica Avenue in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, officers from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) shot dead Saheed Vassell, 34.

The death of Saheed Vassell on Wednesday was the latest fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by police, fuelling more protests and heightening a nationwide debate over the use of excessive force by police and accusations of racial bias in the criminal justice system.

Vassell was seen on the footage, partially released by cops Thursday, lunging at someone with the metal object and pointing it at a person walking hand-in-hand with a child.

After the speakers finished on Thursday, protesters advanced down Utica Avenue towards NYPD's 71st Precinct on Empire Boulevard, the precinct that has jurisdiction over the area of Brooklyn where Vassell was shot. It ends as Mr. Vassell "took a two-handed shooting stance and pointed" the object at the officers, as described previously by Chief of Department Terence Monahan. "You can not be a cop and all you should think about is your life, you know, you will lose your life so let me take a life to save my life", Eric Vassell told WABC. They always have a choice. According to reports, after a confrontation with Vassell, four officers, one uniformed and three plainclothed, shot Vassell 10 times.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio acknowledged that Vassell had a "profound mental health problem", but said he imagined what could have played out if Vassell actually had a gun. "Caller states a male was pointing a gun at people", police quoted the dispatcher as saying.

"Police had a choice".

"As a society, we have to make the message "Black Lives Matter" clear on our streets, clear to all charged with law enforcement, and up and down our justice system", he said.

NY police say the man who was killed was carrying this pipe. They should not train them to kill.

At a vigil Thursday night, Vassell's mother, Lorna, said her son "came from a good home" and that he was not homeless.

"The New York's Attorney General Office has opened an investigation into Vassell's death. They should train them to protect life, to save life", Eric Vassell told WABC-TV. Cops surrounded the intersection and were eyeing protestors from the tops of nearby buildings, according to eyewitnesses on social media.

"I said, 'Is that Saheed?'" Biggs said.

Under an executive order issued by the governor in 2015, the attorney general has the power to act as a special prosecutor in cases involving police killings of unarmed people.
