PETA condemns Salman Khan's bail in blackbuck poaching case

Salman Khan has been convicted in the black buck poaching case

Amidst distribution of candies, bursting of fire-crackers, cheers and whistling by hundreds of fans, actor Salman Khan returned to his Mumbai home in Mumbai on Saturday evening. He retreated after signalling his fans to go home.

"We are very happy that Salman has got bail…Salim Khan saab and his family had got a big relief".

Local news said Khan planned to appeal against the sentence.

Khan remains one of Bollywood's biggest draws despite the off-screen drama, starring in more than 100 films and television shows.

He was whisked off to the airport immediately after getting bail by a Rajasthan court. The community has pursued the case against Khan for nearly two decades and cheered the decision by setting off firecrackers near the courthouse and handing out candies. But he has also had a reputation as a Bollywood bad boy, known for his run-ins with the law - including a fatal auto accident - and his troubled relationships with women. However, Salman's co-actors Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Neelam and Sonali Bendre, who allegedly accompanied the superstar on late night hunting, were acquited by the court. This was the Salman's fourth time in this prison.

Khan spent a total of 18 days in prison in 1998, 2006 and 2007 in the poaching cases, but was freed on bail.

The actors were accused of poaching a blackbuck, an endangered species protected under the Indian Wildlife Act, in Kankani village of Jodhpur during the shooting of film Hum Saath Saath Hain in September, 1998.

Khan has faced other charges in the past.

In 2015, Bombay High Court overturned his conviction in a hit-and-run case in which he was accused of running over a group of people sleeping on a city sidewalk, killing one and injuring four.
