#TrumpTV: Sinclair Broadcasting 'an Unofficial Propaganda Outlet' For Trump

These Pa. news stations are required to read a Trump-esque warning about 'false news'

The video, from Deadspin's Timothy Burke, shows local anchors around the country reciting the same scripted lines that Sinclair provided.

"The new scripted "fake news" segment caused a lot of anguish where I work", one Sinclair journalist told the Huffington Post, which published a report on Tuesday detailing how the company strictly monitors its employees' "editorial activities".

" The company owns 193 television stations and 614 channels across 89 USA markets".

While GateHouse hasn't been called out directly for political controversy, the company was under fire just a few years ago when it sold the largest daily paper in Nevada, The Las Vegas Review-Journal, to casino magnate and conservative billionaire Sheldon Adelson, leaving many at the company to question the motives behind the sale. "We're concerned about the troubling trend of irresponsible, one-sided news stories plaguing our country", the script read. "The sharing of biased and false news has become all too common on social media". "More alarming, national media outlets are publishing these same fake stories without checking facts first".

"This is extremely unsafe to our democracy", anchors say over and over in the Deadspin edit.

The Deadspin compilation video - which shows clips of dozens of anchors reciting the same words - has circulated widely.

But Sinclair got a vote of confidence Monday in a tweet from Trump.

Trump tweeted that "The Fake News Networks, those that knowingly have a sick and biased AGENDA, are anxious about the competition and quality of Sinclair Broadcast". "Sinclair is far superior to CNN and even more Fake NBC, which is a total joke", said the President on Twitter.

The group regularly sends "must-run" content to its affiliate stations, including a package on March 21 featuring former Trump adviser Sebastian Gorka discussing the existence of the so-called deep state, a term for unelected government officials who supposedly run the nation through a shadow government.

Sinclair's critics have accused the media company of propagating a right-leaning, pro-Trump agenda to its viewers.

Sinclair is known for its conservative agenda and received backlash for showing favoritism toward Trump, while highlighting the negative aspects of the Clinton campaign. "Just no credibility", said David Smith, Sinclair's executive to NY magazine in a piece published Tuesday. Scott Livingston told David that Sinclair's "reporting is nonpartisan" - although the company has been frequently accused of favoring Republicans in news coverage.

But instructing local TV anchors to read a script like this in their own voices is a new development.

Last month, CNN obtained an internal Sinclair memo that instructed its broadcast newsrooms air an "anchor-delivered journalistic responsibility message". "The handbook goes on to state, 'To be very clear: you should not have any expectation of personal privacy in any communication using Company owned equipment'".
