Palestinian dies of wounds sustained by Israeli fire

"There are indications that individuals killed or wounded were unarmed or did not pose a serious threat, and in some cases were actually running away from the Green Line fence", Elizabeth Throssell, a spokesperson for the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said of last week's events.

Israel's use of live ammunition has drawn condemnation from human rights groups, which say it is illegal under worldwide law.

The six other deaths include three Palestinian gunmen killed in what Israel said were attempts to attack the border fence and three men who were struck by Israeli tank fire.

The Palestinian journalist syndicate asserted that at least seven other reporters were also injured during the firing by Israelis in Friday's protest. It has also devastated Gaza's economy, made it virtually impossible for people to enter and exit the territory, and left residents with just a few hours of electricity a day.

Hosam Salem, another photographer present at the scene of the incident said that he witnessed Murtaja being shot and he dropped to the ground after he was shot by Israeli forces. It says its snipers carefully targeted only the main "instigators", and accuses Hamas of using the crowds as cover to stage attacks.

Palestinian protesters run for cover from tear gas fired by Israeli troops during a protest at the Gaza Strip's border with Israel.

Thousands of protesters - Israel estimated 20,000 - gathered in locations near the border east of Khan Yunis, in the south of the blockaded Palestinian enclave, and east of Gaza City, among other spots.

Mourners and journalists carry the body of Palestinian journalist Yasser Murtaja, during his funeral in Gaza City on April 7, 2018. But they have stopped short of specifically threatening a mass breach of the border fence.

The UN chief also highlighted the urgency to accelerate efforts to "return to meaningful negotiations that will eventually allow Palestinians and Israelis to live in two democratic states side by side in peace and within secure and recognised borders".

Israel says most of those killed were militants.

AIDA, a network of more than 70 non-government organizations operating in the Palestinians territories, condemned Saturday what they called "the unlawful killing of civilians" Friday.

"The circumstances in which journalists were allegedly hit by Israeli Defence Force fire are not familiar to the IDF, and are being looked into", it said in a statement.

On Saturday, the European Union raised questions over whether Israeli troops engaged in "proportionate use of force".

There has been an uptick in violence between Israelis and Palestinians since US President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December.

It is reported that the Palestinian press association denounced the murder of Murtaja, and announced plans to contact the International Court of Justice in The Hague regarding the matter.
