Kate Brown: National Guard to Border? Not From Oregon, Gov Says

National Guard troops headed for border Friday night

"This is a part of the national security mandate, and as such, the president is very well within his authorities, supporting the governors, supporting local law enforcement to deploy those guard assets until we can security the border-either with a wall eventually or with some kind of a heightened electronic surveillance where a wall doesn't make sense".

The deployments will not be the first time the National Guard has gone to the U.S. -Mexico border. The president, however, does reserve the right to federalize Oregon's National Guard, an action that would prevent Brown from overriding his orders.

Mr. Trump earlier this week announced that he will be sending the military, the White House later clarified he meant the National Guard, to protect the southern border.

Speaking to radio host John Batchelor on April 5, Sebastian Gorka, a Fox News analyst and former Trump deputy assistant, said there are numerous precedents for deploying troops to the border.

As of Friday afternoon, Patterson says the state has not received orders to send troops to the border.

The Republican governors of border states Arizona, New Mexico and Texas back the deployment.

Nielsen said the administration would work with governors to determine how many Guard troops to deploy. Jerry Brown (D) on Thursday in hopes of getting his support.

A spokesman for Republican New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez told the Associated Press on Wednesday that she appreciated the Trump administration's efforts to involve states as the federal government takes steps to better secure the border.

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) said Thursday that the California governor, who has previously accused the Trump administration of "basically going to war" with his state over immigration policy, could say no to the deployment request.

"We'll probably keep them - or a large portion of them - until the wall is built", Trump said.

"If the president were to deploy under Title 32, he'd obviously have to have the approval of the governor", Hockaday said, citing an assessment from the governor's attorney.

In briefing reporters, Nielsen said the administration had recently seen an uptick in illegal border crossings after a steep decline a year ago.

About 250 troops whose deployment will be completed in the next 72 hours and that is added to a hundred national guards that Texas already had on the border since a migration crisis of 2014. The Texas Guard says it has "firsthand knowledge of the mission and operating area" that will allow it to move seamlessly into the new role.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval is the latest governor to oppose President Donald Trump's proposal to send thousands of National Guard members to the Mexico border to help fight illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

The defense secretary, Jim Mattis, on Friday approved using Pentagon money to pay for as many as 4,000 national guard personnel to perform security missions on the USA border with Mexico. "Our current border security and immigration laws fail the American people".

Nearly every USA state and territory contributed Guard members to Operation Jump Start, announced by President George W. Bush in 2006.
