CBI court issues non-bailable warrants against Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi

The development comes just a day after the CBI questioned four senior RBI officials in connection with the PNB fraud involving jewellers Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi

On Sunday, a special CBI court in Mumbai issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against Nirav Modi and Choksi in connection with the alleged PNB fraud case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation, CBI, has questioned former deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India - Harun Rashid Khan in its probe into the PNB scam case.

MoS, MEA, Gen (retd) VK Singh said the counterparts in Hong Kong have been approached seeking the provincial arrest of the diamond trader.

In fact, India's envoy to Beijing, Gautam Bambawale, met top Hong Kong officials just days before the March 23 request was submitted, although his official visit to the HKSAR from March 18 was said to have been arranged in advance and unconnected with the Nirav Modi case.

After hearing the agency's plea to attach the account, special CBI court judge SR Tamboli allowed it and issued a Letter Rogatory (LR) to the UK.

China said on Monday the Hong Kong government was equipped to deal with the arrest and extradition of fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi under relevant laws, indicating it was unlikely to directly interfere with the legal process.

Modi owns a chain of boutiques in Hong Kong.

The CBI is also questioning officers of overseas branches of Indian banks that extended credit facilities on the basis of the fraudulent letters of undertaking (LOUs), issued by employees of PNB, the source said. In case of default, the bank issuing the LoU has to pay the liability to the credit-giving bank, along with interest.

Modi (46), a regular feature on the lists of rich and famous Indians since 2013, was booked by the CBI, along with his wife, brother and Choksi for allegedly cheating the state-run PNB.

Nirav Modi is the prime accused in the United States dollars 2 billion PNB bank fraud case and is believed to in Chinese territory. "If money has gone from our system and parked in that company, our bank's views should be heard before deciding about insolvency petition", PNB Managing Director Sunil Mehta told PTI in an interview. However, Modi and his associates fled the country before the notices were issued.
