House Speaker Paul Ryan to retire after term ends in January

House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wis. center arrives for a meeting of House Republicans on Capitol Hill in Washington Tuesday Dec. 19 2017

We have no respect for Ryan because as the Speaker he is supposed to be one of the checks on the power of President Trump.

Mr Ryan will serve out his term and retire in January, Mr Buck said. Typically, in recent years, speaks tend to hand over the gavel either when their party loses the majority, or when their own caucus decides it's time to go. Politico reported in December that Ryan told confidants he would like to retire after the 2018 congressional elections.

Ryan said he regretted not being able to accomplish what he called entitlement reform, which could involve scaling back government spending on social safety net programs such as the Social Security retirement program and the Medicare and Medicare programs that provide health insurance for the elderly, poor and disabled.

House Speaker Paul Ryan announced Wednesday that he will leave Congress in nine months, after the midterm elections. "First and foremost, Paul is a family man and we admire him for that".

"You realise something when you take this job", Ryan, his party's failed 2012 vice presidential nominee who reluctantly agreed to become speaker in 2015, told a news conference.

President Trump praised Ryan for his time in public service and offered support for his future.

"He unified the House, passed scores of bills, and led with integrity, honor and dignity", Romney wrote.

President Donald Trump carried the district by 10 points in 2016.

The speaker confirmed reports of his expected departure during a morning news conference, telling reporters that he chose to retire from Congress after having accomplished many of his legislative priorities. "It's fleeting. That inspires you to do big things".

Peter Baker, chief White House correspondent for the New York Times, confirmed that Ryan would not be seeking re-election.

He said his decision is what's best for his family. But I will also be leaving incredibly proud of what we have accomplished. That race is expected to be a head-to-head between House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., and GOP Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

Although it's unclear whether Trump himself feels this way, he certainly had a glowing appraisal for Ryan on Twitter when the retirement was announced. "And clearly that's what she's intending on doing and they're raising a lot of money on their side. This is going to make every Republican donor believe the House can't be held". But conservatives aren't likely to roll over to keep the same leadership team. Ryan "recently" came to the conclusion that wasn't the best path for him, one of the sources said.

"I think the next few weeks will determine whether that happens or not", Meadows said.

Meadows told reporters, "Everyone will start jockeying for position immediately".
