Uber's New Bid for Dominance: Controlling Every Way You Move

Here's Why Uber Wants to Buy an Electric-Bike Startup

Uber Rent will launch in San Francisco later this month.

"Launching Uber Movement in Pittsburgh is our next step in giving back to the Steel City and reflects our broader mission to make cities more livable and sustainable", said Andrew Salzberg, Uber's head of Transportation Policy and Research, in a press statement. JUMP is a dockless electric bike service that has rolled out in San Francisco, where it has a small presence with 250 bikes, and Washington, DC. There are indications that bike locations will appear on Uber's app.

So far, the program through Getaround has been targeted at Uber drivers who can pay for cars by the hour then pickup fares.

It's part of an aggressive push Uber is making to position itself as a general mobility platform, rather than the simple ride-hailing app that propelled it into a $70 billion commodity.

'We're particularly excited about JUMP Bikes because they can provide a convenient and environmentally friendly ride that's often faster, especially in dense cities where space is limited and roads can be congested, ' Khosrowshahi continued.

At a future of mobility event in Washington D.C. today, Khosrowshahi announced Uber's foray into vehicle rentals, shared bikes in D.C. and public transportation.

The new program will add more cars to the GetAround fleet than just the existing personal vehicles that owners make available, and make the cars available to anyone with the Uber app in San Francisco.

"In the same way you can rent a bike through Uber, you'll now be able to rent a vehicle through Uber as well", said Jahan Khanna, Uber's head of product for mobility.

Getaround's offerings will appear through a side menu in the Uber app. Users will be able to find and unlock an available vehicle from their phones using wireless technology. You'll be able to get an Uber.

Uber has signed a partnership agreement with Masabi, a transit ticketing firm that has contracts with transit agencies in NY and Boston, among others. He reiterated the company's commitment to autonomous vehicles, saying he believed "very important part of the solution of getting rid of auto ownership". In doing so, we will show that Uber is not just a really great product, but a really great company that is meaningfully contributing to society, beyond its business and its bottom line.

This is what the options for a multi-transit trip looks like in the expanded Uber app. Uber also announced it acquired Jump on Monday. Dubbed Uber Rent, app users will soon be able to rent cars for a short time thanks to the firm's new partnership with car-sharing startup Getaround. The ride-hail company spent much of its early existence fighting off any attempts made by local regulators to gain access to varying degrees of its anonymized data.

Khosrowshahi announced three partnerships on Wednesday.
