Backpage CEO pleads guilty to conspiracy, money laundering charges

Backpage.com Seized, 93-Count Federal Indictment Levied Against Prostitution Website

The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) seized control of Backpage.com and indicted seven individuals on Friday amid allegations that the online classifieds website has facilitated human sex trafficking for years.

Moreover, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced his office's prosecution of Backpage.com resulted in the company pleading guilty to human trafficking in the state and its CEO pleading guilty to money laundering.

Almost a week ago, the classified advertising website Backpage.com was seized by the Department of Justice on accounts of facilitating prostitution and money laundering from its forum.

Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move. "There is no one in the entire world who made more money off sex trafficking than the owners of this website", she said.

"Backpage has earned hundreds of millions of dollars from facilitating prostitution and sex trafficking, placing profits over the well-being and safety of the many thousands of women and children who were victimized by its practices", said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth A. odd. The indictment included details about 17 victims of sex trafficking, some as young as 14 years old.

And a federal judge in Phoenix unsealed an April 5 plea deal revealing that Ferrer pleaded guilty to conspiracy, and Backpage.com pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy.

The various plea agreements call for Mr. Ferrer to shut down Backpage.com worldwide, offer the site'so data into police officers, and also collaborate in the prosecution of its creators, Michael Lacey and James Larkin.

Ferrer's cooperation could lead to criminal charges against others involved with the company.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department, seized Backpage's servers last week after the DOJ found the site took "consistent and concerted actions" to intentionally allow ads for illegal sex work, The Washington Post reported.

The U.S. Senate also recently approved the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA), which would remove a legal loophole that shields websites that knowingly take part in human sex trafficking from legal liability.

Among other claims, the report said that Backpage.com was editing the language on its site to strip out terms that were related to underage girls before the ads were posted in the adult section. Over time, many banks, credit card companies, and other financial institutions refused to do business with Backpage due to the illegal nature of its business.

Ferrer's guilty pleas were filed in state courts in California and Texas, as well as in federal court in Arizona.

But Brown threw out pimping conspiracy and other state charges against Backpage's operators.

Lacey is scheduled for a detention hearing Wednesday in federal court in Arizona, followed by Larkin on Thursday.
