Photos from Winnie Mandela's funeral in South Africa

Madikizela-Mandela

"There were times when people could not afford a funeral and she would assist", said neighbour Gloria Searole, 31, a service consultant who went to catch a glimpse of the procession along with her daughter. "She never stopped serving", he told reporters.

A packed stadium has broken out in cheers and shouts of "Winnie!" as the casket of anti-apartheid icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is walked in slowly for her official funeral.

According to Malema, in the 1980s the UDF called a press conference to distance itself from Madikizela-Mandela.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's memory must be honoured by a pledge "that we will dedicate all our resources, all our efforts, all our energy to the empowerment of the poor and vulnerable", President Cyril Ramaphosa said.

"Mama never depended on anyone but the members of the MKMVA zone 11 her zone for close protection, because she did not believe in getting an outsider to protect her".

Not long afterwards, she met African National Congress activist Mr Mandela and the couple married in 1958, forming one of the most storied unions of the century.

Mandela's husband became the first black president of democratic South Africa, but she refused to follow many other struggle-era politicians who moved from townships like Soweto to formerly white-only suburbs after the end of apartheid.

He said they are from a generation that is fortunate to have lived in the time of Madikizela-Mandela.

She died on Monday, April 2, at the age of 81. The boys had been accused of the disappearances and killings of at the least 18 boys and younger males and the chief was convicted of killing a 14-year-old, nicknamed "Stompie", accused of being a police informer.

Following Makhura was a friend of Madikizela-Mandela only identified as Mrs Mokgobo.

Though she fought fiercely for democracy, Ms Madikizela-Mandela floundered in a political career after the first free elections in 1994.

Mr Mandela divorced her in 1996, claiming infidelity and saying that after his release from prison, his wife made him "the loneliest man". The following year, she was appointed deputy Prime Minister of arts, culture, science and technology in Mandela's unity government but she was later fired after allegations of corruption emerged.

Mandela-Dlamini, her elder daughter, accused the media of being complicit in an extended "smear marketing campaign" towards her mom.

"She bore witness to our struggling".

"Praising her now that she's gone exhibits what hypocrites you're", she mentioned throughout her speech.

Tembisa resident Simphiwe Nzekeni said: "We are here for mama, there is a lot she has done for us and the struggle will still continue".
