Starbucks apologizes for the arrest of two black men

Starbucks

But all hell broke loose at a Philadelphia Starbucks when two young African American men had the temerity to ask to use the restroom before ordering an overpriced cup of coffee.

"If a business calls and they say that someone is here that I no longer wish to be in my business, they [the officers] now have a legal obligation to carry out their duties", Mr Ross said. "We asked them to leave the first time".

The friend can be seen in video of the incident arguing with police, suggesting that the only reason the men were being asked to leave was because of the color of their skin.

This attempt to spin the situation is unconvincing. The stores are "community" hubs, the official said, where people often drop in to use the WiFi or chat with friends and do not necessarily order anything. But even if that was an appropriate implementation of the store's policy, it still doesn't explain why the men were asked to leave, nor why the police were then called on them. "Let's make one thing very clear. This is not a boycott @Starbucks situation. This is terrible management".

Ross' defense of his officers rests entirely on the legitimacy of this premise, but as he continues his explanation in the video, it becomes even less believable. He argued with one of the police officers, calling the arrests "ridiculous". He added that the pair were eventually arrested after refusing requests to leave by Starbucks staff as well as police.

"They freaking put them in handcuffs and perp walked them out the freaking store".

Philadelphia comedian Kevin Hart has responded to the controversial incident that took place at a Center City Philadelphia Starbucks resulting in the arrests of two men.

Police Commissioner Richard Ross said he knew the incident had prompted a lot of concern, but said his officers "did absolutely nothing wrong".

"They were professional in all their dealings with these gentlemen, and instead they got the opposite back".

Starbucks has since apologised for the incident which saw the police called on two black men who were sitting waiting for somebody to join their table.

Another voice exclaimed, "They didn't do anything wrong". A spokesman for the district attorneys office said the two were released "because of lack of evidence" that a crime had been committed, but declined further comment, citing a police investigation.

The company response, he said, was not enough, and he directed the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations to review Starbucks policies and determine whether the company would benefit from training for implicit bias - unconscious discrimination based on race.

Johnson said he hopes to improve the company for all Starbucks employees and customers.

In a statement, the company said: 'We apologise to the two individuals and our customers and are disappointed this led to an arrest. In the viral video, he arrives at the Starbucks and tells police that they were waiting for him.
