Retail Rivals Amazon and Best Buy Team Up to Sell Smart TVs

Above Toshiba Fire TV Edition smart TV

Last summer, Amazon started putting its Fire TV software inside smart TVs from Westinghouse, Element, and Seiki.

"Amazon and Best Buy have a long history of working together, and today we take our partnership to a new level", Jeff Bezos, Amazon's founder and CEO, said in a prepared statement. The Fire Edition TVs by Insignia and Toshiba are created to work seamlessly with Amazon's own voice assistant Alexa.

In the future, Best Buy may carry TVs based on Amazon's Fire TV OS from other brands, including models that include direct access to Alexa. The TVs can be paired with Amazon's smart speakers, meaning you wouldn't need to pick up a remote at all.

In the coming years Best Buy executives said they will introduce other brands and models in various price points that will be integrated with Fire TV.

The new products incorporate Amazon's Fire TV platform, without the need for an additional Fire TV Stick or 4K Fire TV.

"We believe Fire TV Edition further strengthens the growing connection between home theater, home automation and voice control", stated Hubert Joly, Best Buy chairman and CEO.

Best Buy and Amazon released a statement today announcing plans to work together to launch new Amazon Fire TV Edition smart TVs in Best Buy stores throughout the USA and Canada. American customers will be able to purchase the TVs in the summer.

Each of the TVs will also have Alexa voice assistant capabilities built-in. The highlight feature of the Smart TVs is, of course, the Alexa integration. But if what I've experienced with Fire TV devices over the past several years remains true, I recommend you steer clear of the whole lineup.

While consumer goods and apparel companies can better control their brands by selling through Amazon themselves as Best Buy has now made a decision to do (rather than leaving things up to third parties on the Amazon marketplace), research shows they risk Amazon evaluating their best sellers to create its own private label items.

Both Amazon and Best Buy expect they will benefit from the deal.
