Alya Al Harmoudi, director of the Environment Department, DM, said that World Earth Day is a key event on the annual environmental calendar.

Forty Eight years ago, on April 22, 1970, millions of people took to the streets to protest the negative impacts of 150 years of industrial development. In July of the same year, they created the Environmental Protection Agency, and robust environmental laws such as the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act, among many. This weekend more than one billion people across 192 countries will take part in the event.

"It is a day of political action and civic participation".

END Plastic Pollution was the theme of this year's Earth Day observed on Saturday.

To mark the day, people are set to march, sign petitions, meet with their elected officials, plant trees and clean up their towns and roads.

The campaign against plastic consumption has been "moving slowly" because manufacturers and users are "unmindful" of the environmental, climate and health impacts of plastic pollution, she said.

The Earth Day Network states: "From poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our waste streams and landfills, the exponential growth of plastics is now threatening the survival of our planet".

Together, we can exhort universities, schools, school teachers and students to end plastic pollution throughout our islands.

"Our governments are unable or unwilling to take the health risks of plastic seriously and are not moving to ban single-use plastics and non-recyclable products".

The country, he said, should consider ideas to eradicating plastic pollution such as building houses, boats, and other structures with plastic waste.

Dubai marked World Earth Day 2018 in a really unique way, getting a Guinness World Record for forming the longest line of plastic bottles using 58,447 used bottles.
