YouTube Kids will get 3 new child safety features this year

YouTube removed 5 million inappropriate videos in three months even before anyone saw them

YouTube says that they will be adding more partners over time, so we may hear more about local Australian content down the track.

Parent need to go into "Profile" settings, and select from available collections such as Sesame Workshop and PBS KIDS. "6.7 million were first flagged for review by machines rather than humans". YouTube has said that once implemented, when you turn off search kids will only be limited to channels that have been expressly verified by the YouTube Kids team.

YouTube Kids is a separate app for smartphones and tablets that provides access to a subset of the videos available on the main site.

Ever since previous year when it was discovered that kids were exposed to highly inappropriate videos on YouTube, the video service has been working overtime to help parents feel comfortable with letting their children use the platform.

In a bid to give parents more control, YouTube Kids on Thursday announced three new features around the content available in the app.

This does not change the existing structure of the app if parents prefer that. The feature is called "Collections by trusted partners and YouTube Kids".

Like everything else related to Google, YouTube uses algorithms and machine learning to automate the process of weeding out inappropriate content. It's a side effect of the way YouTube Kids finds its videos.

While machines are doing a lot of the work in this regard, YouTube has also chose to hire about 10,000 people to actually review the videos that are being uploaded on a daily basis.

YouTube hit a rough patch in late 2017, with advertisers pulling away from the service after news reports showed child predators using videos of young children as de facto chat rooms and after outcry over YouTube creators using children's characters like Elsa from Frozen or Nickelodeon's Peppa Pig and splicing in non-kid friendly language and themes.

About 1.6 million videos were removed after users, activist organisations or governments flagged them.

YouTube removed 8.3 million videos that violated its terms in the final three months of 2017. These videos have included Spiderman urinating on Frozen's Elsa, Peppa Pig drinking bleach, and Micky Mouse getting run over by a auto.

YouTube notes that parents who do not want access to the new features will be able to keep the current version of YouTube Kids.
